No one can disagree that the most spooky time of year is also the most fun! Though not a recognised holiday and not particularly popular in countries outside of the United States, people's love for dressing up and eating tons of candy means this particular event is celebrated across the world at the end of October.

One huge part of Halloween is dressing up in costumes and going to parties. The fun doesn't stop when you're too old for trick or treating! It's fun to dress up as well-known characters to surprise and delight your friends. Are you hoping to dress as a duo this year? Check out these awesome pair costumes inspired by the most iconic video game characters out there!

1. Mario and Luigi

Probably some of the most iconic video game characters of all time, Mario and Luigi have featured in countless Nintendo titles since the 1981 classic Donkey Kong. With instantly recognisable work overalls, hats, and moustaches, this costume is a must-try and perfect for couples or friends.

For Mario's costume, you can buy the full set online or invest in brown shoes, blue overalls, a red hat, and white gloves. Luigi, of course, is the same but in green. Bonus points if the men out there can grow a bushy moustache to match!

Don't forget the mustaches!

2. Link and Zelda

Another Nintendo game that all video game fans know is the Legend of Zelda series. There have been dozens of titles released on various Nintendo consoles.

Why not dress as our much-loved hero, Link, and Princess Zelda? Or you could go for the hero and the villain by dressing as Link and Ganondorf. Midna, Saria, Malon, and Ruto are all also great choices.

Link and Zelda is one of the trickier costume choices on this list that you'll probably need to be prepared to construct. A green tunic, white tights, brown gloves, and a green hat could work for Link; or you could go the whole hog and make costumes from scratch. You never know, the results could be outstanding.

Their costumes are a little more intricate, but if you have the time to spare, they will look great come Halloween night!

3. Ash and Pikachu

The Pokémon franchise has been massive since the 1990s, and children and adults continue to enjoy the anime, video games, and merchandise this series has to offer. Why not bedazzle your friends this Halloween with an Ash and Pikachu costume?

A Pikachu onesie can be bought fairly affordably online. As the proud owner of one myself, let me tell you that this warm and comfortable outfit also works wonderfully as pyjamas! For a sexy Pikachu, consider a yellow dress or shirt and homemade ears and tail.

Ash is a little more tricky; after all, you don't have a real Ash costume without the famous hat. Green gloves, baggy jeans, and a blue jacket would work (after all, the original version of him is the one we all know and love). For more ideas on making your own DIY Ash costume, check out the video below.

4. Claire and Moira

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is an awesome game which features two women as the main protagonists: Claire Redfield and Moira Burton. These two make awesome costumes and unlike some of the others on this list, they aren't as tricky to make.

For Claire, a dark jacket, black heeled boots, and blue jeans would work just fine. A thigh gun holster and toy gun would be an added bonus! Moira would need leggings, shorts, and a pink hoodie and, of course, her crowbar.

5. Joel and Ellie

A PlayStation 3 game that was so good it was remastered on the PlayStation 4, The Last of Us is one of the most famous zombie games of all time. Ellie and Joel, struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, are another great Halloween costume duo that isn't too complex.

For Joel, dark hair and a beard is a plus. Any old-looking shirt, such as flannel, as well as a backpack, would be fine for Joel, and a red sweater and a ponytail would be all it takes for Ellie. Bring the look to life with fake mud and blood.

6. Sonic and Tails

Another video game classic is the Sonic the Hedgehog series. This quick blue character has appeared on various consoles as well as Nintendo spin-offs and is instantly recognisable. Sonic and his buddy Tails are another iconic duo in the video game world.

You can buy the full set of these outfits online, or have a go at making them yourself. You can go for a full onesie or DIY it with home clothing pieces; it's up to you. The video below offers a quick tutorial to make a fantastic Sonic costume.

7. Kratos and Atreus

The God of War games have been around since the early 2000s, and the 2018 PlayStation 4 exclusive title is considered to be one of the best games of the year. If you're up for a challenge and you're a fan of the franchise, give the Kratos and his son look a go this year.

For Kratos, you can go for the classic look of white and red body paint and a choice of your favourite armour from the game. Atreus needs short brown hair and fake fur. Challenging, but worth it if it's done right.

You can choose between several armour sets if you are dressing up as Kratos.

8. Majima and Makoto

The incredible Yakuza video game series has charmed audiences not only in Japan, but overseas as well. One of the sweetest duos in Yakuza 0 is Goro Majima, a serious Yakuza member, and Makoto, a hunted young woman.

Costumes for these two aren't too difficult. In Yakuza 0, Majima sports a dark suit, white shirt, ponytail, and black eyepatch. Makoto has short hair and wears jeans and a dark jacket.

If you already own a suit or a dark jacket, you're nearly there.

9. Booker and Elizabeth

Any fan of Bioshock Infinite can tell you what a great duo Booker and Elizabeth are. With a taste of steampunk on these indisputably dazzling outfits, you'll impress other Halloween celebrators even if they don't recognise the characters.

For Booker, a brown jacket and white shirt will work. Elizabeth wears a blue jacket and skirt with a white striped corset.

If you're into the steampunk genre, this is the look for you!

10. Peach and Bowser

Although not officially a couple or even a duo, another instantly recognisable pair from the Super Mario video games is Princess Peach and Bowser. She must like him at least a little—after all, she's always over at his castle!

A pink dress and a yellow crown is perfect for Peach, but Bowser takes a little more effort. A onesie can be bought online, or you can go for the real DIY version. For the latter, check out this quite long but in-depth video below.

Get Creative This Halloween

Dressing up is twice as fun as you do it as a duo! These great costumes will bring more fun to your party and start up conversations with people you don't know. Join in this year and impress your friends with some creativity.

So what are you going to be for Halloween? I'm thinking of going as Boo from Mario. Simple and effortless. Hahaha.
