Reading is one of many passions Victoria has. She is always one of the first people her friends ask when in need of a good read!

What Do I Get For Someone Who Loves Books?

Whether it be Christmas, a birthday or an anniversary, something is always creeping up on you and all you can think to yourself is "what am I going to get so-and-so now? I know they love reading but I know nothing of what genres or types of books to get them."

Here's some good news for you: book lovers love more than just books—we enjoy just about everything affiliated with them. In this article, you will learn some new ideas for what to get the reader in your life based on my own personal experiences as an avid reader and regular gift giver. Hopefully, I'll make this occasion a simpler one for you!

It's not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving.

Where to Start

Before buying a bookaholic a gift you should start by asking yourself a couple questions.

  1. Do they have a personal library and enjoy collecting books?
  2. Are there any specific genres they love? i.e young adult, romance, historical fiction, non-fiction or mystery
  3. What kind of reader are they? i.e cozy reader, coffee shop reader or holiday reader
  4. Do they prefer hard copy or electronic reading?
  5. Have they ever told you of a problem they have when reading? i.e discomfort or bad lighting?

These are just some of the questions you can ask yourself that will make the hunt for the perfect gift just that much easier.

10 Gifts for The Bookaholic

1. Gift Cards

You're probably thinking to yourself right now "well duh, already thought of it," but if you want to do something more personalized... that is completely fine. However, books are expensive, and with so many options to choose from, most readers like have that choice of what books they want to add to their collection. So, you may be thinking it's too oversimplified a gift, but honestly, it's the easiest way to get great results!

2. Book Subscription Box

What is a book subscription box? To simplify, it's a company that every month sends a shoe-box-sized gift to the individual that carries a multitude of items based on the theme of the box. Usually including a novel, tee shirt, candles, drink wear, teas, stickers and more depending on the subscription box you choose. You can subscribe for a one-time purchase only or if you want a gift that keeps on giving you can subscribe to these boxes for upwards of 6 months to a year! Below I've listed some popular subscription box sites for example.

Warning: Book boxes can take upwards of a month for delivery—purchase well in advance to gifting day!

Whats in the Boxes?

3. Reading Socks

Yes, you read that right—socks, but not just any socks, reading socks. These socks are equal to a cozy, thick blanket but for your feet. The cozy readers in your life will adore them; I know I do!

4. Cozy Blanket

You can never have enough plush blankets in your home, so why not give your loved one a faux fur throw. The one linked is my favorite blanket, which was actually recently gifted to me from an aunt. Now when I read it's right there with me curled up on the couch while I devour my next novel.

5. Thumb Thing

The Thumb Thing reading ring is a tool that looks like a thumb ring with wings that stick out to hold your pages down. If you've ever experienced a wrist cramp while reading you know they aren't fun, and the Thumb Thing is a great inexpensive solution to that, as well as a unique bookmark.

6. Hook Bookmarks

Many readers I have met are notorious losers of bookmarks, myself included. These old-school hook bookmarks are perfect for the person that can never seem to hold onto a bookmark for the simple metal design that is both weighted making it harder to lose, elegant and unique for the collector. I adore mine and highly recommend these as inexpensive but perfect gift.

7. Reading Pillow

If you read a lot, you know the struggle of finding good back support as well as arm support. Reading pillows are perfect for lounging on the couch reading, watching TV or even having a nap. It a gift that just keeps on giving.

8. Reading Light/Bookmark

This is a newer purchase of mine and I am in love! It's a rechargeable book light that doubles as a bookmark. It also has 4 brightness settings great for any situation. I know, personally, I have been in many situations where turning on an overhead light is not ideal for those around me and this reading light has solved that. The thin design making it double as a bookmark is brilliant—if you purchase this item for yourself or a book lover, you won't regret it! Click here for yours!

9. Reading Journal

Many readers like taking notes while they read, keeping quotes or ideas from the novel as they go for reference later. If you know a reader like this, a neat gift to consider is a nice reading journal to put their notes in. You may want to consider some kind of nice writing utensil as well; after all, you can't do much with a journal without a pen. I recommend this 3-piece wooden pen set. It comes in a beautiful wooden box, refillable ink and writes like a dream. They will definitely add a wow factor to your gift.

10. Kindle E-reader

This would be the big WOW gift to give a book lover. There are many types of e-readers and kindles some cheaper in the $80 price range others in the $300 range, but this one is my personal preference at $139.99. I love it! When I go on vacation I don't have to lug around big books worrying about them getting damaged.

iPads and cellphones glare when reading outside, but Kindles are designed to be anti-glare, which is much nicer on the eyes. Plus, as a bonus, Amazon has a program called Kindle Unlimited where the reader pays $9.99 a month and has full access to over 1 million books! It's a small investment but worth every penny.

The Ultimate Gift for a Book Lover

Every one of these items I have either received as a gift or purchased on my own. As a reader, they are some of my most prized bookish items, and I know that whether you are getting any of these for yourself or a loved one, it will be well loved and used!

Thank you for reading my article—please share your opinion on what kind of bookish goodies you have/want in the comments!
