Looking for that perfect gift idea for dad or the man in your life this year? Hopefully, I can help. As a dad of five kids, I've wiped my fair share of butts over the years. All the work and kids leave me drained sometimes.
So, getting some love from my kids or wife on Christmas always helps. But, I like getting the good stuff. Sure, I pretend that none of it ever matters and that 5-pack of socks is just what I was looking for. But the excitement on my face when I open something I actually want is undeniable. My guess is that it's the same for your old man.
What do I actually want?
A new tool or gadget that makes the house chores feel that much more fun. So, here are a few of those I've put on my list for 2019.
6 Good Tool and Gadget Gift Ideas for Men 2019
Looking for a good Christmas gift for Dad? Here are a few we're sure he'll enjoy!
Vintar Toilet Night Light
Laugh if you want, but we dads have to get up a little more in the nighttime than we used to. Unfortunately, it's not always safe at 3 AM. So, I use this motion sensor LED toilet night light to avoid potential falls or toilet disasters.
For some, this will seem like a bit of a gag gift. For me, I kind of laughed at first. Honestly, it's one of the better gadgets I've added in the past few years.
There are several of these toilet night lights available, but some of them are better and more reliable than others.
Probably my favorite inexpensive option is the Vintar night light option. It comes with 16 colors that work at a 170-degree radius. You can adjust the brightness based on what you prefer.
The light comes on before I even get to the bathroom.
It's as easy to install as a toilet deodorizer and works with batteries. Since it uses a motion sensor, it lasts quite a long time.
Overall, dad might laugh when he first gets this gadget, but it's actually very useful.
Nest Thermostat 3rd Gen
The Nest Thermostat has been out for a couple of years now. This is the third generation.
It allows you to heat and cool your house in a much more modern way. They say that half of your energy bill comes from heating and cooling. For me, I've found that I could save around 20%. As someone who works from home, that's quite a lot and especially considering I want to be super warm during the winter and an icicle during the summer.
When I am out and about, I can control my thermostat from my home. And the new nest works with Amazon Alexa for voice control and Google Home.
The Nest also learns the temperatures you like when you're home and can even be set on an automatic away mode when you're gone.
You can also get other useful information like the current room temperature, the outside weather, and more based on different options you can download online.
Overall, the Nest pays for itself over time. It's a great gift, it simplifies my job in controlling the temperature in our home, and it looks fantastic as well.

Toro Power Curve Snow Thrower
I live in the northwest part of the US. Every year it literally feels like mother nature is trolling me with snow. I'm out in the morning, afternoon, and night sometimes. Why won't it just go away?
For years past, I watched my neighbor across the street with a snowblower quickly get it out, get a better job done than I do with a shovel, and then put it away after 15 minutes.
While I didn't have a ton of money to spend, I wanted to get something that worked well. The Toro Power Curve fit the bill. Toro is the number 1 selling brand of snowblower in the US. That doesn't mean it's the best. Rather, it's the right budget for a lot of people. However, they do seem to do a good job of lasting a long time. I've had my current Toro lawnmower for over 10 years!
Right now, the Toro Power Curve is on sale, has FREE super saver shipping, and moves 700 pounds of snow per minute (just a little faster than what I can do with a big shovel).
Manufacturer's Product Features
- Toro Power Curve snow thrower with new zip deflector
- Larger wheels, ergonomic handle, and 15 amp motor for extra power
- Cuts up to 18 inches wide and 10 inches deep in one pass and throws up to 30 feet
- 160-degree adjustable chute deflects the snow in different directions
- 2-year warranty; weighs 24 pounds
For around $200, the Toro can save the man in your life a lot of time, backaches, and cold. If he's too cheap to buy it for himself, now is your chance.
Kill A Watt EZ Electricity Usage Monitor
Need to save money on your next power bill? Saving power not only is responsible it also saves you money. Use the Kill A Watt Graphic Timer to monitor your energy consumption so you can control how much energy you use even when you are not home.
Though this is one of the most sophisticated timers on the market, it comes with 96 easy to use different programmable power on/off event settings per day and a combination for every day of the week.
Not only does this monitor your usage, but it also protects your electrical devices from voltage spikes as a fully loaded surge protector for your best appliances.
Litom Outdoor Motion Sensor Solar Lights
I turn my lights off at night at my house, so having a motion sensor for my front garage lights and elsewhere for me is important. We live in a relatively safe neighborhood, but I've still seen people in our streets that simply shouldn't be there. At night, this is especially scary.
One easy way to keep unwanted visitors from taking a look around your house is by adding additional motion detectors. Hardwiring these is a pain, so I've chosen to go with a solar detector instead.
Years ago these were quite expensive, but today they're very much affordable.
One good option comes from Litom which comes in a 1, 2 or 4 pack. The 4 pack at around $50 gives you the best overall value.
These lights get charged during the day and can work continuously for over 50 hours in dim lighting mode or 10 in strong lighting mode.
As we have a lot of sun in my area, I typically keep mine in the strong lighting mode.
Overall, this is a relatively inexpensive gift at under $50, provides some additional security, and doesn't take a lot of hardwiring. It also has a great lifespan of around 80,000 hours.

Personally, I like to use mine after mowing the lawn. The curbing and areas around the lawn get much cleaner than they do when I use a broom.
It's also great for cleaning up leaves in the fall. Even with a large pile of leaves I can mulch them down to a few bags and chuck the contents of it in my garbage can. Here are a few more technical details for the blower.
