Get Well Wishes and Words of Encouragement

Updated on August 18, 2015

What to Say When Someone is Sick

Here are ideas beyond "Get Well Soon" to use in signing a card, sending an email, or sending flowers to someone who is ill. A few words can make a big difference in someone's day, and sometimes when we need the right words, they seem to escape us. If you are searching to express your care and concern, look at the sentiments below and find something that captures your thoughts. I think you'll find that taking the time to show a kindness will do you as much good as you do for someone else!

How to Personalize Someone Else's Words

We can't all put our feelings into words like Shakespeare or Browning. I think quotations often give us those "ah ha" moments of "Yes, that's just what I want to say." When a quote captures your message, use it and add a personal touch. I love to do this by making cards. If you're limited by time or crafting ability, buy a pretty box of blank cards and print a quote typed on your computer. Cut it out and insert it inside the card with double-sided tape.

Going to that little bit of extra effort means so much. I think you'll find it also saves you time and money as opposed to making a trip to the store each time you need a card for a different occasion.

Famous Quotes for Difficult Times

Many of these are suitable for illness or injury. They can also be used in other difficult circumstances such as loss of a job or house.

  • "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." – Ralph Waldo Emerson
  • "When it is dark enough, you can see the stars." – Ralph Waldo Emerson
  • "What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly." – Richard Bach
  • "The soul would have no rainbow had the eyes no tears." – John Vance Cheney
  • "If the future seems overwhelming, remember that it comes one moment at a time." – Beth Mende Conny
  • "Mishaps are like knives that either serve us or cut us as we grasp them by the blade or the handle." ~James Russell Lowell
  • "When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on." – Franklin D. Roosevelt
  • "I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind.
Some come from ahead and some come from behind.
But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready, you see.
Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!" – Dr. Seuss
  • "Sleep, riches, and health, to be truly enjoyed, must be interrupted." – Johann Paul Friedrich Richter
  • "Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength." – Corrie Ten Boom

Verses for Cards

The Best Doctors

The best six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it
Are sunshine, water, rest, and air
Exercise and diet.

These six will gladly you attend
If only you are willing.
Your mind they'll ease
Your will they'll mend
And charge you not a shilling.
– Nursery rhyme quoted by Wayne Fields

Hope your burdens are feeling lighter,
And each day is a little bit brighter.
With warm wishes
This just comes to say,
That I hope you're feeling better
with each and every day.

Comfy jammies, cozy bed,
big soft pillow for your head.
Worry not, the world can wait
take your time and recuperate.

This little poem is appropriate for a card with a flower embellishment or with a gift of flowers.

Here's a little bloom
to brighten your room,
And a little card to say
God bless you today!

Beauty Grows in Adversity

Earth's fairest flowers grow not on sunny plain,
But where some vast upheaval rent in twain
The smiling land.

After the whirlwinds' devastating blast,
After the molten fire and ashen pall,
God's still, small voice breathes healing over all.

From riven rocks and fern-clad chasms deep,
Flow living waters as from hearts that weep,
There in the afterglow soft dews distill,

And angels tend God's plants when night falls still,
And the Beloved passing by that way
Will gather lilies at the break of day.

– J.H.D.

Don't Quit

"When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill
When the funds are low and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,

And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow–
You may succeed with another blow,

Success is failure turned inside out–
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;

So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit–
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

– Unknown

Saying, "I'm Here for You"

Simple and Sincere

May each day bring you renewed strength and brighter times.

Just thought you could use a little extra sunshine today.

As you rest and heal, know that you are thought of warmly and wished a quick recovery.

Hope you perk up soon!

Someone Cares

Someone remembers, someone cares;
Your name is whispered in someone's prayers.
Until the sun comes out again for you,
my umbrella is big enough for two.

"If I had a flower for every time I thought of you,
I would walk forever in my garden"

Thinking of You

I think about you constantly,
whether it's with my mind or my heart.
Sometimes we just need to know that people care.
If this is one of those times,
I'm one of those people!

I don't doubt that you can get through it alone,
but why should you have to?
I'm here for you just as you've always been there for me.
If knowing that someone cares helps the healing process,
then you should be feeling better already.

Being sick of stomach cancer is like asking God to take your life and never return to earth again, i will pray and pray for God's mercies toward my life. Asking him to save and cure me from all this terrible disease or take my life. I can still remember being sick of Stomach cancer like it was yesterday. I was chronically ill for 11 years with stomach cancer, having undergo several chemo therapy, radiation and natural treatment due to the pain and suffering i endured, i had no choice but to try everything medicine that offer hope. I lost faith believing i was been punished and the doctor took the last hope that was with me. I would read a lot of articles online regarding the cannabis oil and it's miraculous work's on cancer patient's, having being my last hope, I was privilege to obtain the cannabis oil from the affiliated Rick Simpson team 8 months ago, after proper following of instructions by their medical doctor's on treatment after fulling obtaining the medication, I can proudly let my voice be heard by the whole universal that I have been saved by the Rick Simpson cannabis oil after 11 years of pains.

I appreciate all the support my families and friends gave to me during this trying time of my life and to the Rick Simpson team, I am forever indebted to you all and would always support your organization in all ways of my life.

11 Years of Sorrow has turn into 5 months of total healing with the Rick Simpson cannabis oil, and am so grateful to God almighty for his mercy over my life as am now a dignified victory against stomach cancer. This is to let everyone out there know that they should never give up on God or themselves, no matter the situation in life, there is always a way out of it. “An Awakening”

When I was diagnosed with Breast cancer a few years back, I reacted like most who receive a cancer diagnose; first thing came to mind was a “death sentence”. However, I found out later that it was truly “an awakening”. I began questioning God, why would you do this to me? What had I done in life so bad to have this placed upon me? But instead of bemoaning my fate, I decided to look for the positive side of it. There has to be a reason for it all.

I also realized that I was about to face a new beginning, new hope, do and see more with a whole new prospective on life. When I think of the “gift of life” that was given to me, I know that I will develop and gain strength from all my experiences. After going through all that I did during my breast cancer period, I was left with a few complications I now have to live with; one being daily pain. For a while, I wasn't happy with the way I looked around my breast area, nor the pain I had to endure each day, but I decided to snap out of it. Even after being diagnosed with another cancer (colon) a few years later. Which totally took me by surprise. But even with the pain I had to endure through each diagnose, and all the struggles I've dealt with all my life, I still feel truly blessed. I think about the individuals that are no longer among us. I also realized that there will always be someone worse off than I am. I reminded myself, that I “still have my life”, so who am I to complain.

One day during one of my surgeries, I experienced something of a miracle, as if I went to the other side, so I felt the compulsion to write it down. I turn that experience into a poem and I called it “Peace”. Writing had become therapy for me. I took that poem, along with many others I had composed during my breast cancer period and placed them into book form. I was blessed enough to have that book published. I later had another inspirational children's book published, with a third one on the way. I'm hoping that anyone who has the opportunity to read my first book of poems, get out of them, what I placed in all of them. My poems are from the heart, as real as any could ever be. With the words and phrases of each poem of statement, I wish to make a positive impact on someone who's ill or otherwise, where they could develop the strength to embrace life in a whole new way. I never anticipated becoming a writer, I just became one. I truly believe when you survive a horrific tragedy or a horrible disease as cancer, it's for a reason, “you have a purpose” and I want to live to find find out exactly what that is for me.

That's what I'm all about now, inspiration. I would have never become a writer, producing inspirational poems and stories, if I had not gone through all that I did. I'm a true example that you can survive cancer not once, but twice, providing you catch it in time. I won't say all will be easy, I can't say everyone will survive it, but I can say, have faith and allow that faith to direct your path.

Thanks so VERY much for compiling so many wonderful sentiments on one page! I normally come up with pretty appropriate words when needed. But there are other times (like now) when my brain just can't seem to come up with them. How NICE to have ones to use OR to be inspired by because someone cared enough to supply them. God Bless! :o)

Great lens! (just saw this tweeted via Twitter!) Creating designs for greeting cards is fun and can be rewarding but just as much a burden for me because I never know what to say! Thank you for this inspiration!

I like this lens. It is really very difficult to write well wishes for someone who is down, depressed, and afflicted with illness. 5*

Ever had one of those "that's what I should have said!" moments hours after a conversation? I'll be memorising as many of these as I can so I always have the right thing to say. Great work.
