Printable Color Greeting Cards for the Chinese New Year
Following is a collection of quick and easy Year of the Rat greeting cards. These printables provide a fast, simple, and inexpensive way for parents, teachers, and librarians to celebrate the Chinese New Year with kids.
These cards are designed for young children (preschoolers, kindergarteners, or elementary school children). Each child can write a note to a recipient of their choice inside their card. Some of the graphics on the cards are my own designs; other artwork is used under license from iStock or Pixabay. You may use them for personal or classroom purposes. Commercial use is prohibited.
What Do the Cards Say?
Each of these cards includes the Chinese characters 新 年 快 乐 which mean "Happy New Year."
Underneath the Chinese characters is the pinyin Xīn nián kuài lè, a phonetic transliteration that shows how the words are pronounced using the English alphabet. Take a look at this handy site with a chart that shows how pinyin works. What I especially like about this version of the chart is that the site includes audio so that you can actually hear what each letter combination sounds like.
Happy New Year Cards (5.5 x 8.5 Inches)
It works best to print these cards out onto 8.5" x 11" card stock, then fold them in half so that the rat picture is on the front.

It helps to score the cards along the fold line first. Take a straight edge ruler and put it flush with the line you want to fold. Then, take a paper clip and run the rounded edge along the line, using the straight edge to guide you. By doing this, you will make the smallest little impression along that line, which will give you a much nicer, crisper fold.
If you would like to see the designs available, click on the thumbnail pictures below to see a larger version of each. Note that the blank space you see on the left will be folded to make the back of the card.
