Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday celebrated for eight days and nights. The word "Hanukkah" is Hebrew for "dedication." The holiday commemorates the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem in 165 B.C.E. I've compiled this list of spicy cocktail recipes so you can add some heat to your holiday. Also included below are cocktail party tips, appetizer suggestions, and a short history of Hannukah. Enjoy!

1. Chai Ball

Of course, every good hostess does a thorough taste testing of all her cocktails before she considers serving them to her guests. The chai ball was the hands-down favorite cocktail of our "test group".

Ingredients

  • 2 parts Tazo Chai Tea Latte
  • 2 parts milk, half and half or heavy cream
  • 1 part Fireball Cinnamon Whisky

Instructions

Mix and serve over ice. If you prefer to serve this as a hot drink, heat the milk in a mug in the microwave for two minutes. Add the tea and whiskey. Enjoy.

2. C-4 Lite

This one is explosively good!

Ingredients

  • 2 parts Kahlua
  • 2 parts Fireball Cinnamon Whisky
  • 1 part milk, half and half or cream

Instructions

Stir ingredients together and serve over ice.

3. Drink If You Dairy

This one was our taste testers' second favorite drink.

Ingredients

  • 1 part milk
  • 1 part half and half
  • 1 part Fireball Cinnamon Whisky
  • 1/4 tsp. powdered sugar
  • 1/4 tsp/ vanilla

Instructions

Mix ingredients well and serve over ice.

4. Fireball and Coke

This tasted much better with real Coke than with Diet Coke so our recommendation is to save your diet for another day.

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces of Coke
  • 1 shot of Fireball

Instructions

Mix ingredients and serve over ice.

5. Ginger Ale and Fireball

Just as with the Coke version, our taste testers preferred the real sugar version of ginger ale over the diet.

Ingredients

  • 6 ounces of ginger ale
  • 1 shot of Fireball Cinnamon Whisky

Instructions

Mix ingredients and serve over ice.

6. Fire Cider

This fiery cider cocktail will be a big hit on a cold day.

Ingredients

  • 1 part Fireball Cinnamon Whisky
  • 1 part apple cider

Instructions

Heat the cider in the microwave for about two minutes. Add the cinnamon whiskey and garnish with a cinnamon stick.

7. Fiery Milkshake

This was the third favorite drink of our testers.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of premium vanilla ice cream.
  • 2 shots of Fireball Cinnamon Whisky.

Instructions

Mix ingredients in a blender and serve.

8. Homemade Fireball Whiskey

Fireball Cinnamon Whisky does contain propylene glycol which has prompted many consumers to steer clear of it. Making your own cinnamon whiskey is easy and you can use your favorite whiskey as the base.

Ingredients

  • 750 milliliters whiskey
  • 6 sticks cinnamon
  • 3/4 ounce simple syrup
  • 5 red chilies

Instructions

  1. Mix the whiskey, cinnamon, and simple syrup and let infuse in a covered jar for 5 days.
  2. Add the red chilies to the jar and let sit for two more days.

Tips For Throwing A Great Cocktail Pary

According to the experts at Martha Stewart Living:

  • Each guest will drink an average of two drinks the first hour and one drink each hour thereafter.
  • A one-liter bottle of alcohol yields approximately 22 mixed drinks, so if you know how many guests are attending and what kind of bar you're going to have, you can easily figure out how much alcohol to purchase.
  • Plan on one and a half pounds of ice per person. This will provide enough ice for drinks as well as any ice baths for your other beverages.
  • Make sure you've purchased sufficient amounts of non-alcoholic beverages.

Note: I always use my vintage glassware for that extra special touch.

The Hanukkah Story

In 168 B.C.E. the Jewish Temple was seized by Syrian-Greek soldiers and dedicated to the god Zeus. In 167 B.C.E. the emperor Antiochus made the practice of Judaism punishable by death. He also ordered all Jews to worship Greek gods.

In the village of Modin, a Greek officer ordered Mattathias, a High Priest, to worship the Greek gods. Refusing, a villager offered to take Mattathias' place. Enraged, Mattathias killed the villager and then killed the Greek soldier. He and his sons then killed the remaining soldiers and fled to the mountains.

Mattathias died and his son, Judah, then led the rebels and succeeded in retaking their land from the Greeks. These rebels were known as the Maccabees, or Hasmoneans. Once they retook the Temple, they set about to purify it by burning ritual oil for eight days. Though they only had enough oil to last one day it actually burned for eight days, which is the miracle of Hanukkah.

According to Jewish law, Hanukkah is one of the less important Jewish holidays. However, Hanukkah has become much more popular in modern practice because of its proximity to Christmas. Candles are lit for 8 nights and fried foods, such as potato pancakes and donuts are eaten.

Holiday Appetizers

No party is complete without good food. Why not set up a latke toppings bar for your guests? Let them mix and match their favorite flavors. It's a delicious and easy way to feed your guests and goes oh so great with Hanukkah. Feeling ambitious? Barbecue a brisket and serve shredded as a topping. Keep the extra latkes in your oven, warming, at 200 degrees. Topping suggestions:
