French Toast Ingredients
- 12 Slices Texas Toast
- 1 Box Frute Brute Cereal
- 2 Cups Milk
- 5 Tablespoons Sugar
- 6 Eggs
- 1/2 Teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
- 1/2 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
- 1 Teaspoon Vanilla
- 1/4 Cup Butter
- Reserve one cup of cereal for decorative topping (if desired) and crush the rest into a fine meal. Pour into baking dish and set aside.
- In mixing bowl, combine milk, sugar, eggs, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla. Stir into a runny custard.
- Dip each slice of toast into custard, coating both sides. Place in cereal dish, coating both sides with cereal.
- Fry on griddle with butter for approximately 4 minutes on each side. Lay finished slices flat on parchment-papered baking sheet and place in warm oven until ready to serve.
Reserve One Cup of Cereal for Topping (optional)

Tips for Making Great Frute Brute French Toast
- Crush cereal a few cups at a time in a large Zip-Loc bag or in original cereal bag.
- Crush cereal quickly and easily in blender, if available.
- Don't allow bread to rest too long in custard or it will become too soggy and fall apart.
- Quickly coat your wet bread with cereal and place on griddle. Letting it rest will result in too thick of a coating (less cereal dust for all 12 slices) and your cereal dish may become soggy.
- Serve with powdered sugar, syrup, and reserved ghost cereal bits.

Overnight French Toast
You can also use this recipe for overnight french toast. This is a great time-saver since Halloween activities can be pulling you in many different directions. Prepare the slices as described above. Instead of cooking, arrange slices in Pyrex baking dish, cover tightly with lid and refrigerate. Double check that your lid is sealed tight! You don't want your delicious breakfast absorbing any other smells or flavors in the frig and you don't want your custard drying out either. You can do this 4-12 hours prior to serving breakfast. Bake in 350° F oven for 30 minutes.
Aside from being a delicious French toast recipe, this Frute Brute toast also looks spectacular. Slicing it reveals a golden yellow center that really glows against the pink, almost cartoon-ish coating. This breakfast was fun to make and even more fun to eat. I also made a few slices using the rest of my Boo Berry and Count Chocula Cereals. They each tasted great and tasted even better when different slices were served and eaten together. It's Frute Brute Time!
I love cereal. I love just about all types of cereal. I think I always have. Many cereals take me right back to my childhood. As I've gotten older, I've grown more interested in cereal brands and cereal names -- especially the misspelled ones! Frute Brute is one of my favorite cereals for so many reasons. The word nerd in me loves the alliterative (although misspelled) name. I love fruity cereals and cereal with marshmallow bits. Since I love fruity cereals and Halloween so much, Frute Brute cereal is always a special treat! As an adult, I also pay more attention to the price of cereal. With breakfast cereals often outrageously expensive, I love that I can always find the monster cereals at Target and they're reasonably-priced. Not only did Target have the cereals early this year, but they exclusively carried the vintage-themed boxes. Who doesn't love retro cereals? If only Pac-Man and Ghostbuster cereals could come back from the grave like Frute Brute.
How Can I Make French Toast With Cereal?
As a personal baking challenge, I picked up the fabulous five monster flavors made by General Mills Cereal and started brainstorming. I had made marshmallow cereal treats out of Boo Berry cereal, used Franken Berry cereal to make yummy cupcakes and was wondering what I would make next. I remembered during a summer road trip through California in 2009 that I had some of the yummiest, most awesome French toast EVER! I ate it at a restaurant in Glendale, California called the Cafe Corner Bistro. What was so special about it? It was coated in delicious Cap'n Crunch cereal. When I saw it on the menu, I had never heard of it before and didn't know if I would even like it. I figured we were on an adventure and I was feeling adventurous. It was also very reasonably priced and I ordered it quickly before I changed my mind. I'm so glad I tried it and as much as I loved it, I never got around to making it myself. According to their website, it's still on the menu and I would highly recommend it. Until I can make it back to that great cafe, I used the same concept and made French toast with Frute Brute Halloween cereal. It came out better than I could have ever imagined. This breakfast recipe has a delicious fruity crunch and a delightful pink coloring that make it anything but ordinary.
