The shape dogs are my own designs; the other artwork I purchased under license from istock.com. You may to print them for personal, classroom, or library use. No commercial use is allowed.
- The Chinese character in the lantern is the character for "Dog."
- The Chinese phrases say "Happy New Year!" You have the pinyin—which uses our letters to indicate how the words are pronounced—and the same phrase using the Chinese characters.

How to Print out These Coloring Sheets
I've loaded the images as photos (jpegs). Click on the photo, then right-click to copy it. You can then paste it into a program of your choice, like Word or Publisher. Once you have pasted it, you can enlarge or reduce the image the way you'd like, just by taking the edge of the photo and pulling it to the size you'd like. These coloring pages are all sized for 8.5" X 11" paper.
Landscape Orientation Year of the Dog Coloring Sheets
The first 20 or so coloring sheets are landscape orientation. If you need portrait orientation coloring pages, scroll down.
Portrait Orientation Coloring Pages for Year of the Dog
The following 20 or so pages are in portrait orientation (lengthwise). If you want landscape orientation coloring sheets, scroll up.
It is probably worth repeating that all of these coloring pages are loaded as photos—as jpegs—and that you will need to click on the photo to enlarge it, then right-click on the photo to copy it. Then, you can paste it into any program you like that will allow you to print it. I like to use Powerpoint. I make a slide that is 8.5 X 11 inches, then paste the photo I've copied into the slide. You can "grab" the photo by the corner and pull to make the picture larger or smaller.
You can also use programs like Word or Publisher to paste the picture. Feel free to copy for home and educational use. Please don't use the images to sell.
The Year of the Dog
The dog is the 11th animal in the Chinese Zodiac, and the new year (which starts in much of Asia on Friday, February 16, 2018) heralds the start of the year named for this loyal and kind, but sometimes stubborn animal. (Some say that people born under the dog sign are not stubborn, they just have trouble communicating what they want to say in words.)
Traits of People Born in This Year
People who are born in the Year of the Dog are said to be clever, optimistic, and friendly. They also have a reputation for being good listeners and will not gossip or tell secrets. Dogs are selfless, always willing to help someone out. But if they are tricked by someone who is cunning (we're looking at you, Year of the Rat), they will feel betrayed and hurt. (But then again, who doesn't?)
The recommended occupations for dogs are those that serve others: nurse, police officer, priest, professor, politician (they are supposed to serve others anyway) and counselor.
Besides having the animals of the zodiac in a 12-year cycle, the Chinese also have 5 different sets of cycles: wood, fire, earth, gold, and water. 2018 is the year of the Earth Dog, and those dogs are especially earnest, responsible, serious and communicative.
Famous People Born in This Year
Here are some of famous people who were born in the Year of the Dog:
- Winston Churchill: Wood Dog
- Mother Teresa: Gold Dog
- Michael Jackson: Earth Dog
- Donald Trump: Fire Dog (The traits of the Fire Dog are "intelligent, hardworking, and sincere." I'll leave it to you to decide how much he matches those traits.)
Lucky Numbers and Compatibility
If you were born in the Year of the Dog, your lucky numbers are 3, 4, and 9, and your lucky colors are red, green and purple. You are the best match with people born in the Year of the Rabbit, and you may not get along as well with those born in the year of the Dragon, Goat, or Rooster.
Long ago, people would pay attentions to things like birth sign and date of birth when they were arranging matches for their children. These days, I've heard it said that people ask about zodiac signs as a way to figure out someone's age. I have a friend who was born in the Year of the Ox, like me, and it's easy for me to remember that she's twelve years older than I am because the Year of the Ox comes around once every twelve years.

Thanks! I haven’t gotten to the other animals yet. I did do rooster ones — just click on my name, then choose “profile””. You’ll see all my articles. I do have the artwork for Year of the Pig and will try to get them up this spring/summer.

I really love this style for the coloring pages. Are the other animals available in this style too? I tried googling, but had no luck :(
Adele on January 30, 2018:
The pages are loaded as photos because that’s the only way I can put them in. Click on the picture, then right click to copy. Then paste it into a word processor or publishing program. You can print from that program.
