Spooktober: Spooky Blood-Filled Halloween Cake Bites Recipe
Halloween is nearing, and if you're anything like me, then you are ready for the celebrations to commence (though let's face it, I've been ready since last year's Halloween ended!). Anyway, I thought that this would be the perfect time to share with all of you a simple, yet delicious Halloween-inspired cake bite recipe.
- 1 Medium Egg
- Softened Butter, For Greasing
- 230g Self Raising Flour
- 120g Caster Sugar
- 120ml Vegetable Oil
- 175ml Milk
- Strawberry Jam, For Filling
- 350g White Chocolate
- Food Colouring, (Optional)
To make these spooky cake bites, you are of course going to need a spooky themed silicone mould. I was able to purchase mine very inexpensively from amazon.
- Preheat your oven to Fan 180° (Gas Mark 6). Use the softened butter to grease your cake pan or silicone moulds.
- Beat the egg in a mixing bowl and mix in the vegetable oil and milk. When mixed you can add in the caster sugar and whisk until completely dissolved.
- Slowly sift in the self raising flour to your wet ingredients and mix together until smooth.
- Pour the mixture into your baking pan or silicone moulds and bake in the oven for around 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
I initially attempted to bake my sponge within the silicone mould but found that the more detailed ones were rather difficult to remove without causing any damage. If you feel confident enough, you can still use this method but if not then feel free to just bake your sponge with any ordinary cake pan.
If you managed to bake your sponge perfectly in the silicone molds, you may skip step 5.
You will need to wait until your sponge is completely cool before removing it from the mould.
5. If you used a cake pan or any other mould, you are now going to destroy your sponge. Using utensils or your hands break apart the sponge and place into a sealable bag where you can fully break down the pieces.
6. While your sponge is cooling, you can now melt your white chocolate (slowly so as not to burn it). To do this efficiently it's best to add some water to a small pot and allow to simmer. You can then place into the water a heat proof bowl where you will melt your chocolate a few pieces at a time. If you are going to add food colouring do it now.
7. Once the chocolate is fully melted, use a spoon to pour it into the moulds making sure to create thick even layers around the sides and especially where the details/features are. If the chocolate is too thin, it will most likely crack when removed from the mould.
8. Now that the chocolate has coated the moulds, you can now take your sponge and start to gently pack it into the shape taking care not to create any gaps in the chocolate.
9. When you have filled the mould with sponge, use a cake filler or icing pipe to insert the strawberry jam blood filling into your cakes. Cover the jam with some more sponge.
10. Using the rest of your melted chocolate, cover the tops of your cakes evenly. Don't worry about keeping the edges perfect at this point.
11. Place the entire silicone mould into the fridge for around 25-30 minutes or until the chocolate has completely set.
12. Carefully remove the cakes from their moulds and using a sharp knife, cut away any uneven edges.
