Whether I'm shopping for myself or for others, I enjoy finding treasures at bargain prices.
Treasure Hunting for Gifts
I love to stroll through store aisles seeking hidden treasures at bargain prices. You can often find them at the end of the season or after the holidays when stores need to make space for new inventory. You can also find tons of good deals year-round, both online and in brick-and-mortar stores.
When it comes to Christmas shopping, nobody needs to know what you paid for the gift. The main thing is to put a little effort into selecting a gift that suits the interests and personality of the person you're shopping for. Knowing that you took their individuality into account when you chose the item will put a smile on the recipient's face.
Here are 10 classy Christmas gifts you can't go wrong with. You can find all of them for under $20.
10 Christmas Gifts Under $20
- Throw blanket
- Jewelry box
- Sound machine
- Oil diffuser
- Desk organizer
- Inspirational plaque
1. A Cozy Throw Blanket
Who doesn't love to cozy up on the couch with a warm wrap on a winter night (or anytime, actually)?
A throw is a medium sized-blanket, usually about 3 by 5 feet (0.91 by 1.52 m). However, they're made in various sizes and are sometimes edged with fringe. They're often displayed decoratively on sofas, and they're extremely practical when relaxing or napping on the couch.
Men and women of all ages will enjoy receiving a cozy throw blanket for Christmas.
Their price range varies based on size and material, but you can find quality throws for under $20.
2. A Stylish Jewelry Box or Organizer
Do you have someone in your family who wears a lot of jewelry? A place to keep it organized is always welcome.
Jewelry boxes have a lid that can close. Organizers are used to hang necklaces and bracelets and usually have a small tray to rest rings and earrings on. Sometimes there are little hooks for earrings, too.
Jewelry organizers come in many styles and shapes, and some are absolutely lovely. My favorite ones are shaped like trees, with branches for hanging the jewelry and a tray around the trunk for holding it.

3. A Well-Chosen Book
Everyone knows that people are reading books online these days, but that's exactly what makes a non-electronic book—hardcover or paperback—so special.
You can find some amazing "paper" books at bargain prices.
Do you have an avid reader in the family? What does he or she most enjoy reading about?
Here's a tip: Go to your local Barnes and Noble store, which usually has one or two aisles full of discounted books. This is where to find treasures! Biographies, mysteries, cookbooks, and a myriad of other genres—you'll find it all on the shelves if you look carefully.
Don't go too close to the holiday season, though, as there will be fewer books left to select from. But even then, you're sure to find some great ones.
4. A Soothing Sound Machine
Sound machines have become very popular in recent years as more people have struggled with stress and anxiety. Some companies even use them in the office to help address stress in the workplace.
We have one in our staff lounge at work. Once when I entered the lounge, I approached the window to try to catch a glimpse of the birds singing the melodious, soothing songs I heard. I discovered it was a sound machine placed by the window!
Many people keep a sound machine in their bedroom. I keep mine on all night so that I can crack my window open and block out any outside disturbance. The machine plays soothing sounds and helps maintain a relaxing atmosphere in my room.
Sounds a sound machine plays include:
- Ocean waves
- Birds singing
- Crickets chirping
- Meditation music
- White noise
5. An Attractive Scarf
A scarf in colors I like and that compliments my skin tone is my favorite gift to receive. You can be sure I'll wear it over and over again.
Scarves are extremely practical and versatile for people of all ages. Winter scarves are an excellent gift for both sexes, and dress scarves are also a great option for women. Infinity scarves, which don't have ends (they are a continuous loop), are very popular among women as well.
Consider the favorite colors of the person you're shopping for and the colors that best compliment their complexion. Do they like red or blue tones or shades of grey? Do they prefer solid colors, flower patterns, or plaid?
A scarf is one of those accessories you can never have too many of.
6. A Calming Oil Diffuser
Oil diffusers dispense essential oil into the air, which can help you relax and sleep. Lavender is primarily known for its calming effects and is a popular choice as an essential oil for diffusers.
Some diffusers, like this one, come with a set of essential oils. I was gifted one of these several years ago and still have many of the essential oils that came with it. I love experimenting with the different aromas!
Before I go to sleep, I fill the diffuser with water and add a few drops of oil. I keep it running on my bedtable all night. The cool, fragrant mist is soothing and helps me fall asleep.
Some calming essential oils:
- Ylang Ylang
7. A Unique Apron
Do you have a cook in the family? A classy apron is always a welcome gift and is sure to be used by someone in the household of the person you're gifting it to.
There are so many kinds of aprons these days. Some are so elegant and classy; they look too nice to wear in the kitchen! I bought one for myself with a flower pattern and ruffles, making me feel like a queen in the kitchen.
Aprons get messy when worn by people who cook a lot, which is good because if you buy one as a gift, the recipient is likely to need a new one.
Whether you're shopping for a man or woman, adult or teen, you're sure to find an apron that suits their personality and style.
8. A Personal Journal
Many people are journaling their thoughts these days as a form of therapy and to help them de-stress. And yes, they're doing it on paper (not electronic) journals.
The gift of a journal is likely to be used and greatly appreciated, especially by writers or creative people in general. And who isn't creative?
To make it more special, write a short note on the first page to encourage the recipient to dare to express their creative thoughts and ideas.
Some journals have prompts on the pages to give the writer a little guidance and inspiration.
9. A Classy Desk Organizer
Does someone in your family have a home office they spend a lot of time in? Consider getting them a desk organizer to help them be more efficient and productive when working at their desk.
A high school student, college student, or any businessperson with a home desk will appreciate an organizer to help them keep their desk supplies in order.
Some desk organizers even include a small drawer and other compartments for various commonly used office supplies like pens, sticky notes, and paper clips.
10. An Inspirational Plaque
Do you have an entrepreneur in the family or someone hoping to start their own business? A plaque with an encouraging message will be valued.
I purchased one for myself several years ago when I started working as an independent contractor. When I came across the plaque in a store, I was immediately drawn to its message. I posted a photo of it above.
I've kept it on my desk within my eyesight ever since, and it never ceases to inspire me!
Plaques with inspirational messages make good gifts for anyone, really.
It's a matter of determining which message you think will resound best with the person you're shopping for, based on their personality and where they're at in life.

How to Buy Good Christmas Gifts
Having a list of the names of people you're shopping for, along with a few notes about their interests and personality, can be very helpful.
Keep the list with you as you stroll through those bargain aisles looking for treasures! It will help you stay focused and productive and keep you from stressing out and wasting time.
Based on my dad's interests and personality, I may keep my eyes open for a book about history or a book of funny quotes.
- Movies (loves Lucy shows)
Based on my mom's personality and interests, I may get her a DVD of the I Love Lucy shows.
- Health nut
- Trouble sleeping
Based on my sister's interests and situation, I may get her an oil diffuser that comes with a set of essential oils. It will help her sleep better, and since she is into healthy living, she'll appreciate the essential oils, which are super therapeutic.
Don't get caught up in the mentality that you have to spend a lot on Christmas gifts because you don't.
With a bit of planning and effort, you can purchase classy and thoughtful gifts for each person on your list without breaking the bank.
Remember to keep the personality and interests of those you shop for in mind as you select presents for them. A thoughtful gift that is carefully wrapped is worth more than one purchased out of pressure to impress or to measure up to others' expectations.
