How to Create a Wednesday Addams Halloween Costume
Wednesday Addams Costume
If you are looking for a classic character you can be this Halloween, I would like to suggest Wednesday Addams to you. Here is what is great about being Wednesday:
- This is a super easy costume you can make at home.
- It is age appropriate for little girls, but adult women can be Wednesday as well.
- The costume is relatively cheap to create.
- You have options on how "modern" or "old fashioned" you'd like the costume to be.
In this article, I am going to focus on how to create a 1960s TV version of Wednesday Addams, although I will discuss the movie version of Wednesday Addams as well. You can opt to make a change or two for the movie Wednesday Addams or for that matter, the Wednesday Addams featured in the comics.
While doing some research on Wednesday Addams, I found there are many "adult" costumes available for Wednesday Addams. Although I think Halloween is a fine time to wear an outfit that may be considered a little risqué, I don't find that appropriate for a costume based on a child. The following tips are for what I would consider a G-rated Halloween costume for all ages.
The hair is the easiest part of the Wednesday Addams look. You will simply need to part your hair in the middle or slightly to the left, and then braid your hair into two braids. It helps if you have dark hair. The movie version of Wednesday Addams has black hair. The TV version of Wednesday Addams has dark brown hair.
If you do not have dark brown hair, you may want to get a wig. There are wigs available specifically for Wednesday Addams. If you are not able to find that particular type of wig, you could simply buy a long, dark brown wig and braid it yourself.
If you are feeling especially ambitious, you could even get some temporary hair color to make your hair darker. You could also use black hairspray to achieve your look. Just beware! Black hairspray rubs off easily and you could find your neck, hands, face, or anything else it touches turning black.
The Wednesday Addams outfit is probably one of the easiest to achieve as far as TV characters go. TV Wednesday Addams wore a black dress with buttons in the front. She also had white collars peaking from under the dress. One is to assume she had a dress on over a white dress shirt. Movie Wednesday Addams had a similar look except her dress had a small pattern on it.
In my opinion, you can easily achieve a Wednesday Addams look with a basic black dress. I would say the white collar is a good idea to wear as well, but if you don't own one, no big deal. As far as shoes go, both Wednesdays wore black boots that were not too tall. They had laces through them. Since barely anyone pays attention to that type of detail, black tights and black dress shoes would work just as well.
If you are an adult or a teen, you may opt to wear makeup with your Wednesday Addams outfit. For a small child, no makeup is even necessary considering the TV Wednesday Addams never seemed to wear any. If needed, perhaps a little makeup to make the face paler is a good idea.
The movie version of Wednesday Addams did wear a bit of makeup to make her face look paler. In some scenes, it looks as if she is wearing eye makeup to make her eyelids a little darker and lipstick to make her lips a little darker.
Basically, if you are an adult, I see no reason why you should not look like an adult version of Wednesday Addams. You can do that without making your outfit overly sexy, even though you will find very adult Wednesday Addams costumes on Amazon. My opinion is, if a character was never intended to look that way, it is best to keep with the original (childlike) intention.
Hope these suggestions help and have a very happy Halloween!
