Every time that October rolls around, the most commonly asked question is "What are you dressing up as for Halloween?" Some people plan months in advance, while the majority of us wait until the last few days leading up to the party.

If some of you ladies are not sure what to dress up as yet, not to worry - here is a compiled list of six easy DIY costumes, all with pop culture inspiration. Each costume on this list includes suggestions for items you will need, as well as a few ideas to take it a step further. 1. Rosie the Riveter

One of the easiest costumes on this list, people will instantly recognize you as one of history’s most famous figures.

  • An all-denim outfit (however, if you have access to a jumpsuit, that’s even better)
  • heavy boots
  • Hair tied up with a bright red bandana
  • bright red lipstick.

Be sure to strike the famous pose!

2. Breakfast at Tiffany's

This is one of classic Hollywood actress Audrey Hepburn’s most famous roles, and even decades later, this outfit is still instantly recognizable. Holly Golightly (the character’s name) is seen as a symbol of class, elegance and timelessness.

  • A long black maxi dress,
  • Accessorize with lots of pearls – pearl earrings, necklaces, bracelets, anything!
  • Hair styled into a high bun or top knot.
  • Tiara.
  • Simple makeup, but be sure to have defined eyebrows (Audrey was known for her classy brows)
  • A pair of large sunglasses.
  • If possible, a pair of elbow length black gloves would tie together the outfit perfectly.
  • A long black cigarette holder (or simply a long black wooden or plastic dowel).

3. Orange is the New Black character

Netflix's Orange is the New Black (simply known as Orange or OITNB) is easily one of the most popular television shows right now. Taking place in a women’s prison, this show has many memorable characters. Everyone wears the same uniform - khaki shirt and trousers, white long sleeved tee and black boots - but each character puts her own twist on it.

If not khaki, you can always go for wearing bright orange clothing – it’ll tie in much more with the title!

For a Suzanne/Crazy Eyes vibe, tie your hair up into little Bantu knots and mimic her jerky movements and hilarious quotes (Remember “chocolate and vanilla swirl”?)

To be Red, adopt a thick Russian accent, wear a white shirt with gray pants, and if possible, style your hair in a similar ‘messy’ way.

For easier identification of your character, feel free to add a name tag!

4. Amy Winehouse

Known for her beautiful voice, alternative style, and tumultuous personal life, Amy Winehouse was one of the music industry’s biggest stars who passed away far too soon.

To recreate her famous look, you will need the following:

  • A black tank top.
  • A pair of frayed denim shorts.
  • Hair styled into Amy's famous ‘beehive’ hairstyle
  • Dramatic winged eyeliner.

Also be sure to draw on a beauty spot to mimic Winehouse’s Monroe piercing. To take this costume a step further, you can wear tattoo sleeves, or even apply some temporary ones along your upper arms.

5. Roy Lichtenstein artwork

This one is for the ladies who are more skilled in the makeup department, and will definitely need a little extra time to prepare.

Roy Lichtenstein was best known for his pop art, most of which featured figures drawn in a comic-book style. One of the most defining factors is that every character’s skin tone is made up of little pink or red uniform dots. Also, be sure to define your brows, eyes and lip outlines.

Check out the many YouTube tutorials (one is included below) and gather the necessary makeup, tools and brushes. It’s strongly recommended to use costume or waterproof makeup; basically any type that won’t smudge with sweat or water.

Some people apply makeup only to the face and neck areas, but if you’re feeling adventurous, continue the dots all along your forearms and visible skin areas. A brightly coloured wig would be a perfect finishing touch to your look.

Wear a simple outfit and hairstyle, as you don’t want to overshadow your amazing makeup. Everyone will be amazed by this costume and will beg to take photos with you, guaranteed!

6. Mermaid

Mermaids are still one of the most popular costumes for Halloween - after all, who wouldn't want to be one of these mysterious beauties of the deep? The great thing about this costume is that you can put your own personal spin on it.

  • Bikini. (Feel free to add on shiny beads or gems!)
  • A long skirt or leggings that can double as a 'tail'.
  • Temporary hair chalk or dye in pastel colours.
  • Colourful accessories like shells, pearl necklaces and floral hair clips - these will give a nautical vibe to your costume.
  • Nautical props, like tridents, fishnets and toy fish. (Optional)
  • Glittery makeup

There's also the age old trick of using fishnet stockings and shimmery eyeshadow to give a 'scaly' look - apply these on your face, shoulders and chest. A brightly pastel coloured wig is another great option.
