Making a Reunion Video or Slideshow

Videos or slideshows of a family reunion are a great way to end the event, remember the time you've had together, or share the reunion with people who could not come. Moreover, this year's video makes a perfect start for the next reunion. I made this video celebrate the 10th reunion of an adoption group that traveled together to China.

How to Make a Quick Reunion Video

The key: Don't panic, and don't try to make it perfect. You can always go back and edit later. I wanted to make a video to show everyone before they left. You can make a video quickly too if you don't worry too much about making it just right. Just put in the slides and videos and then put on some music and a few captions. To save time, don't worry too much about matching the music to the video, making sure things are in the right order or cutting out the boring parts of the video. Just put on some good music (see list below) and everyone will love seeing themselves and talking about the video as it shows.

Pick a Video Editor for Reunion

Anyone with a camera or phone can contribute videos and pictures, but it helps to have one person designated as the main Editor and creator of the video. Preferably, it should be someone who already knows how to use I Movie, Windows Live Movie Maker, or some other video editing software. If not, they can learn on the fly by looking at the "how to" videos below.

How to Make a Reunion Video

The Video Editor should be in charge of:

  1. Collecting the pictures and videos from everyone. You might want to use a cloud storage site for everyone to upload to, or else have people email them to you.
  2. Picking out some music to add to the slideshow portion (see my suggestions below). You might also want to have some captions in the movie of family sayings, quotes, or mottos.
  3. Sorting through the videos and pictures to get the best ones. Doing this before you import them into your movie makes the project easier in the end.
  4. Importing the photos and videos into IMovie or Movie Maker.
  5. Organizing Video. Putting the videos and pictures in order is the most important part. You can do this by family or in chronological order (as I do in my movie). You may also want to trim the videos to get the best parts and keep the movie to a reasonable length. Generally under 15 minutes is better for sharing online.
  6. Adding Music, captions and credits.
  7. Publishing the Movie. You can saving the movie in several formats to be shown on a computer, emailed, or uploaded to Youtube or Facebook among other social media sites. Be sure everyone is agreeable if you decide to make your movie public.

Songs for Family Reunion Video

The music for your video is really key to capturing the emotions and relationships. Often people tell me that it was the words of the songs I've chosen which made them cry. Here are some great songs you might want to download to use:

  • "Family Reunion" by the Original OJays
  • "My Wish" by Holly Tucker
  • "You've got a Friend in me" by Randy Newman (Toy Story)
  • "A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri
  • "Whenever You Remember" by Carrie Underwood
  • "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby (for Christmas renions)
  • "We are Family" by Sister Sledge
  • "My Hometown" by Bruce Springsteen
  • "Those Were the Days" by Dolly Parton
  • "It's a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong
  • "It's a Family Affair" by Sly and the Family Stone

I love the video idea. We have a reunion coming up at the end of the month and it would be a great idea to capture those important moments. The songs you list are excellent suggestions for this type of keepsake.
