Winter Riddles for You and Your Kids

Winter Riddles is One of a Series of Riddle and Joke Hubs for Families

Are you ready for yet another go round?

A little levity and laughter to lighten the mood is a great way to start a new year. This is one of a series of fun joke hubs that you can share with the kids in your life. Other Joke Hubs include Christmas Riddles, Valentine's Day Riddles, and others. If you have some rip roaring winter riddles to add to the ones listed here, feel free to include them in the comment section at the end.

Orange you glad you've found this article? Come along with me for another round of silliness.

The riddles on this hub have either come from my memory or have been inspired by ancient copies of Highlights for Children that I have stacked in my basement.

Winter Riddles Are Always Good for a Laugh

But Which Answer Is the "Correct" Answer?

Those of you who have visited my Christmas Riddles for Kids article may have noticed that there are always two answers to my riddles. This is just to make them a little more fun and sort of like a game. If you choose to answer the silly question, you can choose the answer that you like the best and then compare your preference to how others have voted. If you can think of an answer I haven't given, feel free to add your own in the comment, but please -- clean answers only! After all, this hub is meant to be shared with children. Remember I have the option of deleting your comment if it's off colour.

But which answer is the correct one? In this world, there are not always simple answers to Life's great conundrums. Both answers make sense in a way. Yet one of the two answers is correct in the sense that it is the answer that has been passed down in the great world of riddlehood. The other answer I just made up. You can choose which answer you like the best. Answer the question (if you choose to) in the quirky way that suits yourself. Unlike in real life, "correct" answers don't make or break you.

So then, have some fun with me as you peruse these riddles. Be sure to leave me a comment at the end to let me know how you did or if you want to add your own two cents worth.

Laugh at the Snow!

Making Up Riddles and Jokes Can Be Fun

Get Kids Thinking!

Have you ever made up riddles and jokes with the young ones in your life? Not only do kids have fun telling jokes over and over, they can also learn something by stretching their minds when making up their own jokes.

Creating riddles requires a different type of thinking than straight forward logic. You need to think of all the different meanings of a word. A table has legs, for example, and a wall and a ceiling come together in a corner, while you may have a corner store in your neighborhood, and a good strong pair of legs! When you are seven or eight years old and you have never acknowledged these common uses of such simple words as legs or corners before, putting the two meanings together in a riddle can seem awfully funny. We oh so sophisticated adults may tire of the jokes with two simple meanings, but kids may not.

How does this process of creating riddles help a child's thinking skills? Well, in searching for words with several meanings or homophones that sound the same but are spelled differently, a child is trying hard to think "outside the box." He is also extending his vocabulary and becoming aware of how words are used in different contexts, which may help in decoding skills while reading.

Perhaps this is part of the reason kids at this age seem to delight in riddle and joke books. Who knew they were learning something in the process?

Did You Have Fun?

Well, now that I've shown my silly side -- did you have any doubt after seeing my profile photo? -- I hope you'll leave a message to let me know whether or not I've made you smile. After all, life can be filled with many stresses and woes, and taking the time for a laugh or a giggle is important to our mental health.

I have been known to release my stress in laughter at the most unlikely times (childbirth? bone marrow biopsy?) Life can be tough but laughing at oneself and with others is one of the gifts we have been given to cope with some of the big and little moments of stress.

Have a laugh a day. Share a happy moment with another. Don't laugh at others but with them. Once in a while it's okay to laugh at oneself, though. It helps keep us humble.
