How to Propose

Asking someone to marry you is a big step in any relationship. Not only do you want it to be a memorial moment, but you also want them to say, "Yes!"

If you're lost for ideas on how to propose, keep reading this article and take notes.

45 Ideas on How to Propose

  1. Do it the old fashioned way. With a rose clenched in your teeth and the ring in your hand, get down on one knew and ask the question.
  2. Have a waiter bring you her favorite dessert with the ring inside of it. (Be careful that she doesn't swallow it).
  3. Take them to the theatre and ask the stage manager if he will allow you to come up on stage and propose after the final curtain.
  4. Show up at her/his office in the middle of the afternoon armed with a red rose, a bottle of champagne and a glass with the ring in it.
  5. In big letters, write "Will you marry me (name)" in chalk on the street outside your house or apartment.
  6. Call your local radio station and get them to pop the question for you over the airwaves at a time that you know she/he will be listening. Then dedicate a song to her/him.
  7. Gather all your friends and family for drinks either at a favorite restaurant or your home and pop the question in front of everyone.
  8. Gather friends and family outside his/her home waving banners with the words "will you marry me?" on them. Kneel in front of them on one knee holding the ring. (Make sure that they get the right house).
  9. Send a singing telegram to her/his workplace. Then walk in just after the song is finished and pop the question.
  10. Create a web page all about your life together. Photos, places that mean a lot to you both. Send him/her the web address and wait for his/her reply and when accepted you can then send the address to friends and family.
  11. Wrap a large box and fill with smaller wrapped boxes. The last and smallest box will have the ring inside. Alternatively, wrap a large box and fill with those tiny foam pieces and let her look for the small box inside.
  12. Cut the bottom out of a very large box then wrap it. Take it to your loved one's place of work and ask one of her colleagues to go get her telling her that there is a large parcel for her. Meanwhile, climb in from the bottom so that when she unwraps it you can jump out with the ring in hand and ask her to make an honest man of you.
  13. Take them away for the weekend and when you are on your last day pop the question.
  14. Get up extra early and prepare her/him breakfast in bed. Cook his/her favorite meal with a red rose and a bottle of champagne and a kiss to wake him/her and then declare your love.
  15. Scatter rose petals all over her bed and put the gift wrapped ring in the center. Tell her that you bought her a gift to show how much you love her. When she opens it tell her that you want to spend the rest of your life with her.
  16. Cook your loved one a romantic meal and place a note around the napkin like it is a napkin holder asking her/him to marry you. Or slip the napkin (use fabric ones not paper!) through the ring, when she goes to put her napkin in her lap she will find the ring.
  17. Give her a foot massage and place the ring on her little toe.
  18. Blindfold them and take them to the place where you first met each other. Take along a bottle of champagne and two glasses to celebrate after you propose.
  19. Bake them a cake and write on top of it "Will you marry me?"
  20. Take out a full page ad in a paper that you know your loved one reads regularly and be close by when he/she reads it.
  21. Buy your loved one a watch and have it inscribed "marry me."
  22. Pour them a glass of wine with the ring in the bottom of it and when she drinks the wine she will find the ring.
  23. Go for a picnic together then pop the question.
  24. Propose at Christmas by hanging the ring in it's box from on the tree as if it was an ornament. Tell her to find the new special ornament you just purchased for her.
  25. If you're dining in a fancy restaurant, ask the waiter/waitress to write, "Will you marry me?" in chocolate sauce around the rim of his/her dessert plate.
  26. Run her a bath with scented candles, and rose petals, and after she is in the tub, float a rubber duck with the ring tied around it's neck in front of her.
  27. Serve her oysters in bed with the ring inside the shell.
  28. Write a note asking your other to marry you, place it inside a bottle. Take her/him to the beach when he/she is in the water slip the bottle in and ask them to open it to see what it says.
  29. Leave a trail of notes for him/her to follow, and when he/she reaches the end you will be standing there with a sign or you can say "Will you marry me?"
  30. Scratch your proposal into the frost on his or her car's windshield.
  31. Take your partner to the beach and write "Will you marry me?" in big letters in the sand.
  32. Take them on a sailboat ride and pop the question.
  33. Leave the ring on her pillow with a note and take a shower.
  34. Take them up in a hot air balloon with a bottle of champagne and announce that'll you'll jump if she/he doesn't marry you.
  35. Take her/him to see his/her favorite band and ask one of the stage crew if they will pop the question for you.
  36. Plan a treasure hunt. Set the clues in place and when he/she gets to the last clue you will be standing there with champagne and a proposal they can't refuse.
  37. Hire a skywriter to spell your proposal on high.
  38. Hire a plane to fly a banner with your "Marry me (insert name here)" message written on it.
  39. Sneak into her home and fill it to the rafters with balloons and or flowers and in the middle sit a teddy bear holding the ring and a note asking her to marry you.
  40. Propose in French the language of love.
  41. Play Hangman and have the phrase be "Marry Me."
  42. Throw them a surprise birthday party inviting friends and family, and then propose.
  43. Write them a story about your relationship. Almost like a diary with dates if possible. Then end it with the date you are going to give it to them, telling how you proposed and that the story can't be ended until you have the answer.
  44. If it's snowing, write "Will you marry me?" in the snow.
  45. Take him to see his favorite sports team playing and get the commentator to ask him to marry you.

I wrote my fiancé a song so that she'd have a keepsake that would stand the test of time. The song was about our relationship and how we met, in the end of the song i asked her to marry me. You can hear the song here.

If i ever do pop the question I'm going to have all our friends from school transported on a bus to the beach and blindfold her, then have Will you Marry me and walk her up to it and take the blindfold off and when or hopefully she says yes all the friends come out.

i'm a farmer so i wrote it in the field and hired a helicopter to fly us around and then she saw it....then i hired a limo to be waiting for us after the ride was over to take us to dinner

Spencer on March 20, 2012:

Those were some great ideas, but i have one of my own.

This week I am going to ask my gf to marry me, by buying a hart shaped tart tray and put it in a large 1 gallon zip lock bag with a fake ring in the center of the tart tray, along with a a lamented note. Fill the bag with water and freeze it. I'll give her the frozen bag and let her melt it. Where she will get the note which says, "Now that you have melted my hart will you marry me!" (I'm using the fake ring so as not to possibly damage her diamond ring :))

Breakfast on February 17, 2012:

What about this:

Go somewhere nice for dinner that has nice property (like a place that holds events). After dinner, go to the car, and pretend it won't start up. Pretend to call the tow truck company and tell your date the wait will be one hour. Tell her to go for a walk while you are waiting. Have something set up where you are walking to... It would be all dark, then all of a sudden...lights, music, drinks. Then pop the question.

Tiana on December 21, 2011:

Be ALONE with your girl when you propose! You want to start a life with HER, not her family, plus it will put extra pressure on her that may result in her saying NO! When and IF she does say yes, her family will find out and you will eventually be ONE big family.

Make her feel like you want to start a life TOGETHER, you and her. Less pressure for you AND her.

Good luck boys, remember she WANTS to say yes :)

CallieCallaster on December 16, 2011:

I like number one! The classic. And it also would make a great prop for the idea that I'm going to throw out there: hire a photographer to secretly hide somewhere and photograph the moment when he gets down on one knee. My husband did this and the photos came out amazing! I thought it was such a cute extra... definitely got him some brownie points. Once I was done screaming he came out from behind the bushes in Central Park and introduced himself, then snapped some cute happy-couple photos. The guys he hired were awesome. Go to them if you are in NYC!

Steve on December 15, 2011:

I'll be proposing on Christmas Eve (unless nerves get the better of me!). My girlfriend's a nurse, and is working on Xmas Day, so we're having our Christmas a day early.

We've already agreed to do stockings for each other, and my plan is to have the ring in it's box, wrapped like everything else, right at the toe of the stocking. When she finds it and opens it I'll pop the question. Then we've got the whole day together, Xmas dinner (we do the big turkey, trimmings etc thing on Xmas day rather than thanksgiving in England), go for a walk, watch nonsense on the telly and have a few drinks. Obviously I'm hoping it'll snow. It's bloody cold at the moment, so you never know!

There was no way I'd get the ring thing right, so I've ordered a hello kitty ring (she's a fan) - only 15 quid, but it's more symbolic than anything else, and I figure we can go shopping for what she wants between Xmas and NY.

Now there's just the small matter of ringing her Dad and asking for his permission. Only met him a couple of times, but we seemed to get on well.

Oh, and no. 29 is a truly dreadful idea! (nos 9, 17, 25 and 31 aren't much better), but what do I know...

Happy Christmas all..

I have been planning to propose to my girlfriend of 5 years for sometime now. We are both previously married and have six children, I have three and she has three. I was trying to find a time when all of our families would be together but I cant get it. So I am going to do it at my christmas gathering with my family. I just cannot wait any longer, the kids add a twist to it because you never really know how they will react. They are 8 to 17 years old, i'm thinking i just expect the worst and hope for the best. She has no idea! I told her I would never get married again! I'm going to wait until after the presents have been opened christmas eve then say there is one more.

Top of Mount Washington. Go early though take the guided tour before 9:30 it's like $60. at the top you get an hour, if your late you'll only get a half hour. At the summit ask her. I'd try to get her to say something like- me- "what do you think (looking off the summit) she- it's beautiful (or similar) me- but no as beautiful as you and ask her at the highest point in the Northeast. I live in RI, and wheather is pending and etc. but another place is Cathedral Ledge or something falls the name escapes me. sorry.

Do what your heart tells you, if you feel you are ready to propose then it should not matter where it is, however i can personally think of better places than a prom. Although wrong and some may not relevant others will judge you.

Hope it all goes well

teej on October 07, 2011:

I'm thinking about proposing to my girlfriend at her prom this year. (i know what everyone will be thinking -- we are too young but we have been together for a long time.and we even live together. I am one year older than her and we already went to my prom. Anyway, I was thinking about having the dj call us up on stage and then I could tell her how much I love her and want to spend the rest of my life with her and ask. Then they could play our song. We've already talked about marriage and she can't wait for me to propose. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Ratonel on September 18, 2011:

I'm kind of worried that reading these kind of posts will make my future spouse's proposal... expected and that I will disappoint him with my lack of emotions because it is difficult to act surprise after all....

Tallia on September 13, 2011:

~Sigh, such thoughtful guys out there. Been with my fella' five years and he's not so much as bought me a Christmas present yet. Maybe that's why I remember a cheese sandwich he surprised me with three years ago. Was so touched that he thought of me in the queue to get his lunch. It was filled with all my favourite things.

I'm gonna' write my dream proposal here as I don't imagine a proposal at all will ever happen, nevermind a dream one ...

He wakes me in the morning on a day we both aren't at work with a breakfast tray of tea, cakes and fruit and pretty lovely little things and amongst them is the little velvet box and when i see it, he simply says 'will you marry me?' and then kisses me and puts the ring on my finger. Not the most exciting, to some, but bed in the mornings is one of the only times we get to be together and shut the world out and its just us.

...I'd wait a while before breaking it to him that I've known which dress to wear, got the cake sorted already and even have the wedding favours sorted out ,'' lol

Kaden on August 31, 2011:

Clueless about how to propose to girlfriend of 7 yrs. Only have one idea so far. She has been talking about getting a wedding planning book from the bookstore for a while now the kind with the organizer, ideas, etc. I was thinking I could talk with the bookstore people in advance and plant the ring in one of those wedding books. I would ask the clerk to show us to that section of the store when we get there and she would recommend the book that has the ring stashed in it. My girl would discover it hopefully and turn to see me on a knee...Thoughts please? I feel its lame being in a bookstore but it has reason behind it.

So I was thinking of propsing to my girlfriend. We are both previously married and in our 40s so we have both been there before. I wanted to do something very special and this is what I've come up with. She works in the financial district in San Fransisco and she rides the bus to work and home each night. I thought it would be nice to have a few select friends get on the bus a stop or two after she does so that they are there with us when I propose and then I'd get on a stop later in a tux holding flowers and a ring. I also thought it would be cool to hire a few singers to sing a song that she really likes by the four tops "Sugar pie hunny bunch." maybe as soon as she gets on the bus.

I'd talk this over with the regular bus driver of course so he would be prepared. Thoughts?

Im liking number 30.

I am planning to propose to my honey muffin in the near future. I've been going frantic about how to go about it and all the rings etc.

I have finally found the perfect ring.

And now the perfect proposal.

I will do a little treasure hunt with hidden notes at each place of importance to us. When she gets to then end, I will be waiting at the place we first met.

Any other ideas? Im not sure if that would work. :/

well i was with my ex for about 7y. we were high school sweethearts. it was about time for me to propose to her. so i did. i got into MMA back then. i had this idea for my first pro fight to win my fight and bring my girl into the ring right after i won, and propose to her in the center of the octagon in front of the audience. it went really good over all. after 1y prier to the day i proposed to her we are no longer together anymore. i am currently involve with someone els. that i strongly have feelings for. i truly feel that she is my everything! so my mind is wondering once again and is eager to plan a really cool or more to say; romantic better idea for my new proposal to my new love. we have been together for about 2 years now, and i am willing to take that extra step. i want it to be not only special but romantic, sweet and big! any idea's people??

My brother took his girlfriend to the botanical gardens here in South Africa- its a beautiful place. He got someone to place roses and it said 'will you marry me' with the roses. While walking around she spotted it and stopped to read it at that time he went down on one knee and showed her the ring- she started crying and said yes! There were ppl standing around and they clapped! it was so sweet and well planned. The ring also has an engraving in it which is adorable!

I just propossed my girlfriend 3 days ago. We were spending some days in a typical little town in Mexico. I took her first to dinning and then I told her to take dessert in my familys place but first she would have to come with me to check some paintings that my cousing was interested in buying (he owns the hotel). When we got the room she inmidiatly began checking the paintings while I was oppening a door to a terrace which was all full o candles and flowers. There were 4 fancy deserts on the table along with a bottle of champaign. As soon as she turned to comment the paintings she could see the terrace and the whole setting se was amazed and broke in tears. We came together to the terrace I opened the champaign bottle and after some minutes a full mariachi band (mexican band) started to play on the street just downstairs from the 2 floor terrace where we were and she started to cry againg se was so happy because she always had wanted me to bring a Serenata (mexican style concert for loved ladies) to her. During the first song I propossed her, it was the third surprise in a row afer she said yes we came over to the side and made a sign to the Mariachi to come up to the terrace and have a private concert. It was just amazing.

With a note that said the following: Now that I've kissed the ground that you walk on, and showered you with flowers...Will You Marry Me? I then came around the corner in a tuxedo on one knee with the engagement ring of a lifetime.

*Note this only works well if your house is CLEAN. ESPECIALLY the restroom. Make it look good, smell nice, light candles, dim the lights. Make it a night to remember!

The best ways are to go back to the place you 1st met or to write it in the snow with candles. Just make sure someone is there because she'll want pictures.

These are not only terrible, but cliché. If a man is so uncreative and uninspired, that he turns to this site, he must not be in love in the first place. IGhk!

My friend proposed by writing it in glowsticks on the beach at night time

If u want to propose in front of family-Get everyone to play a game of Pictionary. (Make sure she's YOUR partner) Attach "will marry me?"to one of the cards. Whether she guesses it, good and even if she doesn't guess in time u can turn the card over so she can read it

used 42, she loved it, though she did almost kill the dude, that would have been a bad omen.

My lord, I didn't realise there was soooo much effort put in to it, this must be an extremely stressful time for you guys.... I believe in the romance of it all, the man on bended knee, asking the love of his life to take his hand... so much planning must take the romance out of it for the guys... I don't envy you... I think simple sweet and romantic and nothing will top it.. you can have a thousand ways to ask some one to marry you... but it only matters if the answer is YES!!!!

Dan on July 30, 2010:

Lots of great ideas and a few pretty bad ones. I honestly cannot believe how many children have been posting comments here about getting married. These are adults talking and if this were in real life(not the internet) you wouldn't dare share you childish dreams with this audience. If you don't have full control over your life and the decisions you make and your parents still control whether or not you can see your loved one that's a pretty obvious sign you are not ready for marriage.

I am proposing tonight, I'm 30 and she is 28. We've been together for 2 years and lived together for over a year. I'm not exactly sure how it will happen since the weather is not cooperating and I'm currently working on plan B, but its sure to be a very heartfelt moment between two people that love each other deeply and have specific plans for their lives. I'm not extremely concerned with finding the perfect place to do it, or a goofy/creative way to ask. I'm just concentrating on the words that I say and making sure she knows how strongly I feel for her. Everything else will melt away when she says that magical three letter word "YES".

i know someone who wrote will you marry me on a car ticket and put it on his fiances car. and when she got to her car she was all pissed she got a ticket. then she read it and turned around and he was on one knee holding the ring box open.

romes on July 10, 2010:

well my original plan has kinda backfired. she is all over anything i do that seems special or nice and she is kinda upset that she would just be waiting for it and expecting it. I want to catch her by surprise, i don't want her to know what hit her...

She has been looking at getting a new job for a little while now. At the risk of disappointing her a little, i have set up a phony meeting with a recruiter, I got one of the girls from my office to call her and set up an appointment at a cafe. So far so good, she bought it and is going to the place at 10:30 tomorrow morning... when she gets there she'll find me.... looking sheepish. Some people think its cute and clever, i'm just a bit nervous about the time, 10:30 Monday morning then we both have to go back to work, not ideal but i guess its a nice way to start the week.

JAY on June 15, 2010:

So I am going to propose to my boyfriend of 6 years next month (July 2010. I am just not sure if this is a unique and "good" way to do it, so I am asking for a little feed back. At dinner I am going to write a note for the waiter to give to my boyfriend as I "go" to the restroom, the waiter is going to tell him that someone bought us a drink and then he is going to sit the napkin down on the table and leave it for a few seconds then he is going to pu the wine glass down on top f the napkin with the ring in it and I will be standing behind him waiting for the what do you think?

kyle on June 14, 2010:

i belong to a theatre company (volunteer) and halfway through my performance, im going to break character, walk to the audience, take my gf by the hand, walk her back up to the stage and ask her there. what do you think??

Robbie on June 08, 2010:

Luis... YES! Or better still (in my opinion)...and if you're both 'early birds', find a beautiful-scenic hill/mountain top and watch the sun rise together and then pop the question. For me it has heaps of symbolism (new beginnings etc).

Of course you'll have to do a 'recky' before hand and check the weather forecast!

If you haven't proposed already, GOOD LUCK! :)
