June 6th Birthdays: Why We Rock

Jayme was born on June 6th, and thinks its a great day to celebrate.

Happy Birthday To Us

Today is my birthday. No applause, please! It happens every year with very little effort on my part. And I know I share this day with thousands of other people—people who are probably all amazing!

No offense to those born on any of the other 364 days of the year, but I think we June sixers rock! We might even have the coolest birthday, apart from those born on Halloween and Leap Day, of course.

So why is this day, that isn't a holiday, such a great day? Because it is our day! Okay, just kidding. But here are some real reasons why everyone else should be jealous of us:

Your birthday flower is the rose.

Your birthday flower is the rose.

First, June Weather Is Fine!

For the most part (depending on geography), June Sixers have perfect birthday weather. It is not too hot. It is not too cold. We might even be lucky enough to go swimming. At the very least, a picnic dinner is not out of the question.

If you have been diligent about gardening, then you may have June roses for your birthday. The rose is traditionally considered the birth flower for the month, and they come in a variety of colors and styles to suit your eccentric Gemini personality.

Gemini Characteristics

You are the sign of the twins. This means you may be:

  • Charming
  • Witty
  • Smooth-talking
  • Contemplative
  • Fickle
  • Good at making money
  • Romantic
  • Free-spirited
  • Logical
  • Curious
  • Adaptable
  • Communicative
  • Adventurous
  • Easily bored
  • Clever
  • Cunning
  • Creative

You are considered to be :

  • A thinker
  • A visionary
  • A dreamer
  • A romantic
  • A philosopher
  • A problem-solver
  • An intellectual

We Are Geminis!

Geminis are those people that others either love to hate or hate to love. We know we can be super annoying.

Being born under the sign of the twins means that every Gemini is like two people. Geminis are creative and love to communicate, but their famous "quicksilver" minds and low boredom thresholds mean that they are buzzing back and forth from one topic or hobby to the next or even doing two or three at the same time.

That can be frustrating for anyone who thinks they are talking to a predictable person. Geminis are not predictable. They are witty, however, and love to make people laugh.

That love of communication and hyperactive thought process means that Geminis make good writers, artists, actors, journalists, and even teachers. Since they often think in abstracts, see the whole picture, can predict the outcome of scenarios, and play serious head games with people, Geminis also have the ability to be successful villains.

If you know a Gemini who uses their brains to take over the world, then they probably won't be the villain that lets the hero escape. They've already been through all the possible scenarios for escape while they were eating breakfast, reading a book, talking on the phone, and playing a game of chess.

On the other hand, a Gemini villain might wake up one morning and decide that he or she no longer wants to rule the world, then skip off in search of a book on how to collect butterflies.

School Is Out

What could possibly suck more than having your birthday on a school day? Whether you are in third grade or your third year of college, you want to kick off and have a great time for your birthday, right?

Great news! June 6th birthdays are almost always school-free. (Exceptions made, sadly, for longer school years, summer school, and colleges that don't understand the importance of cake binging.)

Unfortunately, there is no summer break if you work. However, if you've been really good and saved up your vacation, it is the perfect time of year to take a week to yourself and hit the beach, the lake, the mountains, or just hang around the house.

June 6th and Fire

Seems like fire is a popular event on this day of the month. Moscow and Seattle were both consumed by fires on June 6th. A church in Norway was completely destroyed by arson on June 6th. And in 1912, the second largest volcanic eruption occurred in Alaska.

June 6th Is a Day of Chaos

For some reason, June 6th seems to put people in the mood for war. Many historical battles occurred on this day. This might not be the best thing about our birthday unless you are really interested in history. On this day throughout the years:

  • Beijing was captured during the fall of the Ming Dynasty (1644)
  • British forces temporarily seized the city of Havana (1762)
  • Union forces capture Memphis, TN, during the Civil War (1862)
  • Finland declares war on Bolsheviks (1919)
  • French troops capture Abeche (1909)
  • Battle of Belleau Wood (1918)
  • Battle of Long Khanh (1971)
  • Battle of Midway (1942)
  • Battle of Normandy (D-Day) 1944
  • Lebanon War (1982)

Maybe this is why every year we are also treated to a free "end of the world" scare.

June 6th Had Some Good History Too

Not everything about June 6th involves war. There were some positive historical moments to remember as well:

  • Ashmoleum Museum opened in England (1683)
  • New Amsterdam was renamed New York (1664)
  • YMCA was formed (1844)
  • First drive-in theater opened (1933)
  • The NBA was formed (1946)

It was also the day that Roy Orbisons hit single "Only the Lonely" was released. Smooooth.

The Scary Birthday Number

In one of the most famous horror movies of all time, The Omen, Damien Thorn, son of the Devil, is born on June 6th. That is enough to make a lot of people shudder when you say your birthday is the sixth day of the sixth month.

To add to that effect, every ten years, your birthday will fall on a year ending in six. And if you were born any time before 2006, you were one of the many June sixers to celebrate yourself on the ultimate 666 birthday that year.

2006 was also the year that the remake of The Omen was released in theaters. In some places, theaters didn't play the film until the next day, if they even showed it at all!

In 2006 I had every intention of seeing the new Omen. However, it was not playing in Hot Springs, AR. This may have been a good thing since that day, there was a terrific thunderstorm strong enough to make all the doomsayers believe the world really was coming to an end. At least for Arkansas.

What a shame, though. We will have to live to 2106 in order to see another 6-6-06 birthday.

Famous Geminis

You share your zodiac sign, but not your birthday, with these people:

  • Morgan Freeman
  • Johnny Depp
  • Marilyn Monroe
  • Angelina Jolie
  • Blake Shelton
  • Paul McCartney
  • Prince
  • Paula Abdul
  • Mel Blanc
  • Ian Fleming
  • Michael J. Fox
  • John Goodman
  • Nicole Kidman
  • Wild Bill Hickok

Famous June Sixers

What could make the day even better? How about sharing it with a few celebrities and other famous folks? Did you know that if your birthday is June 6th, you share it with the actors Robert Englund and Jason Isaacs, both of whom have portrayed some deliciously evil characters onscreen?

Robert Englund is famous for playing Freddy Krueger, the wraith that kills kids by entering their dreams. After he teases them mercilessly, of course. And Jason Isaacs is famed for his roles as Lucius Malfoy (Harry Potter), Colonel Tavington (The Patriot), and Captain Hook (Peter Pan), three pretty bad guys.

Interested in more? Here are your famous birthday buddies:

  • V.C.Andrews
  • Paul Giamatti
  • Sarah Bernhard
  • Harvey Fierstein
  • Alexander Pushkin
  • David Abercrombie (of Abercrombie and Fitch)
  • Joe Stampley
  • Bjorn Borg
  • Uncle Kracker

Not too bad at all!

The first Friday in June is National Free Doughnut Day. On certain years, this coincides with June 6th. That means free birthday Doughnuts!

Be Awesome Another Year

Yep, we have roses and pearls. We share birthdays with the National Basketball Association AND the son of the Devil. We eat cake (or free doughnuts) while others remember Normandy.

We probably read our cards while doing a million other tasks. Then we run outside to enjoy the weather. June 6th is a great day to be born. But don't celebrate with a hot dog roast. Fires are hard to put out today.

Happy Birthday fellow June Sixers and other Geminis. See you next year!

Joanna McKenna from Central Oklahoma on July 30, 2014:

Once upon a time, I was part of a group of friends who were all Geminis of some degree. I have no proof, but suspect we Geminis are naturally bipolar. Sometimes we're up and full of energy, and sometimes we're down and have no energy beyond staring at our navels until the pendulum begins swinging upward again. And sometimes we're in the middle of the cycle, the "maybe I will and maybe I won't" stage. Which means that 6 or 7 Gems hanging out together was most interesting! Only rarely were we all "up", but when we were, there was no end to the fun we could generate just by walking into a room...or the havoc we could create if we had a mind to.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the ONE downside of a 6-6 birthday (or any summer vacation b-day, for that matter): not having our day celebrated in grade school. The mother of a classmate born in fall, winter or spring would come in with cupcakes and Kool-aid, and for a half hour or so, the birthday boy or girl would be the center of attention, an honor we summer babies would never enjoy. :-(

@Sheilamyers August is a great month too! Have lots of family birthdays that month and they almost always involve lakes, picnics, cookouts, pools, etc. :) I also think it is cool to read about other people's birthdays and why they do or do not like them. Thanks for stopping by!

Jeb Stuart Bensing from Phoenix, Arizona on June 11, 2014:

Good writing. My Birthday is on June 6th, 1975 at 6:30 pm. I was told many Omen jokes during my youth. Your words are are nicely expressed. You hit the mark with my personality traits.

Happy Belated Birthday! My brother shares your birthday :)!

Jayme Kinsey (author) from Oklahoma on June 08, 2014:

@Rebecca Hillary Nope, no school here. It starts in August and ends in May/June. It is different depending on which state you live in though. I was homeschooled though, so I had a lovely flexible schedule. :D

@TedWritesStuff--any reason to celebrate!

Happy birthday! I think August is also a good month to have a birthday because I didn't have to go to school and we usually had a cookout for my birthday party. It's cool to read about who has birthdays and what happened in history on your birthday. You're in company with some very cool people.

Rebecca Hillary from Yorkshire on June 07, 2014:

Good grief, no school in June? Here in England the kids are still at school until the back end of July!

A belated happy birthday to you nonetheless!
