25 Easter Quotes About the Importance of the Cross

For over nine years, MsDora has been sharing poetry, creative writing, quotes, and reflections online.

The cross is the universal symbol of Christianity.

The cross is the universal symbol of Christianity.

Carrying the cross by himself, he [Jesus] went to the place called Place of the Skull (in Hebrew, Golgotha). There they nailed him to the cross.

— John 19:17, 18 NLT

According to The History of the Christian Cross by Sundra Chelsea Atitwa, before the death of Jesus, the cross carried worship significance among other religions practiced by Egyptians, Syrians, Greeks, Persians, Europeans, Africans and others. However, “The crucifixion and death of Jesus on the cross conferred a new significance to the use of the cross in Christianity.” The cross became the universal symbol of Christianity after the reign of Roman Emperor Constantine (306–337) and is not likely to be replaced.

The following quotes give insight to the deep spiritual importance of the cross in the life of the Christian believer. They help us focus on its significance—not only at Easter when Christ’s death and resurrection are celebrated—but all through the year when we feel the need to nurture our faith.

About the Significance of the Cross

1. “Why is it that the cross has become the symbol of Christianity? It is because at the cross Jesus purchased our redemption and provided a righteousness which we could not ourselves earn.” —Billy Graham

2. “The cross is the universal symbol of Christianity… One beam horizontal, the other vertical . . . One represents the width of his love; the other the height of his holiness. The cross is the intersection . . . where God forgave his children without lowering his standards.” —Max Lucado

3. “Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups [Jews and Gentiles] to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death.” —Ephesians 2:16

4. “Only those who understand the profound paradox of the cross can also understand the whole meaning of Jesus’ assertion: my kingdom is not of this world.” —Dietrich Bonhoeffer

5. “As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world’s interest in me has also died.” —Galatians 6:14

6. “In his death on the cross, Christ becomes the place of refuge, the place in the world where the full wrath of God has already been spent. Therefore, to stand in Christ is to stand in a place where the wrath of God will never be felt, because it has already been there.” —Rory Shiner

7. “The cross of Christ is the sweetest burden that I ever bore; it is such a burden as wings are to a bird, or sails to a ship, to carry me forward to my harbor.” ―Samuel Rutherford

8. “God proved His love on the Cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died, it was God saying to the world, ‘I love you.’” —Billy Graham

"Without the body, the pain, and the blood, the Crucifixion is meaningless." —Reed

"Without the body, the pain, and the blood, the Crucifixion is meaningless." —Reed

About Jesus' Suffering on the Cross

9. “People want the spirit of Jesus, without the Incarnation; the death without the pain; the sacrifice without the blood. But without the body, the pain, and the blood, the Crucifixion is meaningless.” —Eric Reed

10. “At the time of Jesus, the Romans lined the entrances of cities with crosses as a convincing deterrent to all who would oppose them. It was a terrible and humiliating way to die.” —Scott McCaig

11. “Allow the spit of the soldiers to symbolize the filth in our hearts. And then observe what Jesus does with our filth. He carries it to the cross.” —Max Lucado

12. “We may learn the lessons of meekness and lowliness of mind as we go up to Mount Calvary, and, looking upon the cross, see our Saviour in agony, the Son of God dying, the Just for the unjust.” —Ellen White

15. “Why did you suffer for me, dear Jesus? For love! The nails . . . the crown . . . the cross . . . all for the love of me!” —Gemma Galgani

16. “I have tried to understand what crucifixion must feel like. I just know that the pain must be beyond what I have ever experienced. I respect, love, and trust the One who endured all this when He didn't have to.” —Marina Nemat

"At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light." —Watts

About the Success of the Cross

18. “Life is wasted if we do not grasp the glory of the cross, cherish it for the treasure that it is, and cleave to it as the highest price of every pleasure and the deepest comfort in every pain. What was once foolishness to us—a crucified God—must become our wisdom and our power and our only boast in this world.” ―John Piper

25. “Just as Christian came up to the Cross, his burden loosed from off his shoulders, fell from off his back, and began to tumble down the hill, and so it continued to do till it came to the mouth of the sepulchre. There it fell in, and I saw it no more!” ―John Bunyan

Thanks Brenda, for your persistence. You still did better than I do; I haven't mastered the comments yet.

I love your focus on Easter being a time for beginning. The events surrounding the cross surely made that possible.

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on January 07, 2021:

Ms. Dora,

I was so delighted that I was going to get to read this one & leave a comment, but the forces are working against me.

Each time I try to access this article it becomes unresponsive.

I have been able to read a bit of it. I love the wuite by Ellen White with the picture of the cross.

Easter is a time to remember new beginnings.

Take care & have a nice day.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on January 07, 2021:

Thanks, Manatita. Hopefully, this season will remain void of the spending activity which comes with Christmas, although the balloons, kites and Easter eggs do add up. I appreciate your spiritual focus.

manatita44 from london on January 07, 2021:

Refreshing Quote. Many think that Christmas has either been too commercialised or suitable for more family time. In that sense, Lent has become more meaningful to many from a spiritual standpoint. Both sides have their virtue.

Your quotes are timely and meaningful as we are in a crucible of fire created by a Love, which is concealed and most need hope. Peace, my Dear Dora.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on January 07, 2021:

Thanks, Flourish. Terrible yes, but purposeful, sacrificial and redemptive are also some of the other adjectives believers use to describe His death.
