Bedouin Sayings

The Bedouin were Arab nomads who lived in the desert regions across what is now the Middle East. They were instrumental in the development of the Arabian horse. The Bedouin tribes prized their Arab steeds and treated them like members of the family. In fact, the horses often shared a tent with their masters.

Because their horses were such an important part of their culture, the Bedouin developed many sayings about their beloved equine companions. Most believed that the Arabian horse was especially blessed by Allah. Below are English language versions of some of the best-known horse quotes from the Bedouin. Some even come directly from the Qu’ran.

  • "The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse’s ears."
  • "When God wanted to create the horse, he said to the South Wind, 'I want to make a creature of you. Condense.' And the Wind condensed."
  • "The horse is God's gift to mankind."
  • "Of all creatures God made at the Creation, there is none more excellent, or so much to be respected, as a horse."
  • "And Allah took a handful of southerly wind, blew His breath upon it, and created the horse . . . Thou shall fly without wings, and conquer without any sword. Oh, horse."
  • "So tender is the Arab of his horse, that he will seldom beat or spur him; and in consequence of this humane treatment, the animal considers itself as one of the family, and will allow the children to play round it, and to fondle it like a dog."
  • "When God created the horse he said to the magnificent creature: I have made thee as no other. All the treasures of the earth lie between thy eyes. Thou shalt carry my friends upon thy back. Thy saddle shall be the seat of prayers to me."
"Give a horse what he needs and he will give you his heart in return." —Anonymous

WOW Beautiful quotes!!

This was my favourite!

"When I bestride him, I soar; I am a hawk: he trots the air; the earth sings when he touches it; the basest horn of his hoof is more musical than the pipe of Hermes. – William Shakespeare (Henry V)"

Beautiful!

That's a great collection of horse quotations - some of them very amusing, too!

I learned to ride at school and then in later life rode daily for several years. I don't have the land for a horse now but I dream of it still. And not just riding, but I have always loved all the other stuff; grooming, maintaining saddles and tack - even mucking out! And I also love the smell of horses.

Thanks.

Pamela Dapples from Just Arizona Now on May 25, 2012:

You have written 976 hubs! That is amazing, habee! I've written 39 and I'm working on my 40th.

I came back to read this hub again. I love it and if I knew how to make stationary with a motto on the top, I've chosen one for the job. It was hard to choose.

Sharing this hub.

P.S. I disagree with jockeyfox above. In a perfect world, horses would do fine without humans. They were here before us by a day or two. They were on the American continents even -- roaming free and finding food just fine.

Angela Brummer from Lincoln, Nebraska on May 25, 2012:

Oh I love the horses and the quotes are great!!!Bless you for sharring!!

horseriding101 on May 21, 2012:

Thanks for taking the time to compile all the quotes! They are beautiful!

jockeyfox on May 20, 2012:

Horses are the only domesticated animals that are totally dependent on humans for survival. Unlike the dog or cat, they can't be freed to fend for themselves. If they are not fed and watered by man, they will die. Too often they are bought by people who don't understand this and horses suffer horrible deaths. "Except for the grace of man, the horse would be extinct today."

I really enjoyed the quotes thanx!

My daughter still rides and I love to as well. I read the quotes to her and it nice to know the love of horses abounds from Churchill to Faulkner and in between! Thanks for posting!

God forbid that I should go to any heaven in which there are no horses. - Robert Browning

This was my favorite on your list of quotes. Well, one more, too, but it's awfully cheeky:

I've spent most of my life riding horses. The rest I've just wasted.

Thanks for a lovely time reading your hub.

Ah, the Bedouins were so wise. My Arabian gelding, Jubilee, still charges around his pasture like a 5 year old. I'll never tell him he's thirty five! I'm with you, habee: when I inhale the scent of a horse, I I am reminded of all that is good on this Earth. Thanks, habee, I'm really enjoying your hubs :)

No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle. – Winston Churchill

That is my fav - as Dim is right - if you are in the saddle, you can't have time to worry about anything, especially if you ride like me!

To ride a horse is to ride the sky. (TOTALLY true)

A woman needs two animals - the horse of her dreams and a jackass to pay for it. (This is what I'm sticking to - do you know a jackass I can hit up for a horse? Probably not gonna convince Bob in this lifetime!)

Great hub and love the pictures.....sigh....
