52 Writing Quotes for the Writer's Motivation

Ms. Dora loves to share poetry, creative writing, quotes, and reflections and has been writing online for over eight years.

My friend sent me a text: "I restarted the writing of my book. I need you to sit on my back." Translation, "Keep me motivated."

I've compiled 52 quotes from which I can send him one weekly, in no particular order. The aim is to help him focus.

RTalloni on April 09, 2019:

I began this list thinking I would pick a favorite to mention when I finished reading. Ha! :) Narrowed down to three they are Dr. Suess, C.S. Lewis, and Anne Lamontt, however, you made choosing rather difficult! Thanks for these motivating quotes as I am facing a project I need and want to finish but am feeling quite inadequate for the job.

"I write to give myself strength. I write to be the characters that I am not. I write to explore all the things I'm afraid of." Incredibly inspiring collection of motivation here.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 27, 2019:

Well Eric, I cannot see the mess from where I am. I can see the truth in what your buddy says. You do give great advice. No matter where your conversation begins, it progresses to love. You are a bundle of cheer. I am not surprised that the cancer is not having any fun inside your body; your mind and body are too full of positivity to host anything undesirable.

Eric Dierker from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on February 27, 2019:

Dora I just finished up a meeting with 3 tough hombres. My buddy walked me out and said "What the Hell Dierker your life is so messed up how can you give such great advice?" I am in remission. I am coping with other health issues. "Those do not mess with love or intelligence my friend". It is your job my friend to do the work. It is my job to create. Give me a ringer but I am going to get my boy.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 27, 2019:

Thanks Liz. Hoping that all (including me) who need them make good use of them. We all need these reminders occasionally.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 27, 2019:

Nithya, I reap many benefits from researching and sharing. Thanks for your participation.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 27, 2019:

Shauna, I had to think through that one, and finally I nodded in agreement. What would life be if we just huddled together in comfort and didn't listen to or write/tell stories? Another story, please!

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 27, 2019:

Verlie, great observation, and I hope that at least one of the quotes under Procrastinating will help you. I've got lots of books in head too! Taking a dose of my own medicine here.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 27, 2019:

Glen, thanks for your reminder that reading is a prerequisite to writing. In his own way, Stephen King brings us around to that idea: "If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that."

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 27, 2019:

Thanks, Mary. I can relate to the pursuit of that silence. Sometimes when we get there, the Muse welcomes us.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 27, 2019:

Eric, what pleasant memories you must have! No wonder you always display such satisfaction with your life!

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 27, 2019:

Thanks, Tim. You're a great encouragement and that quote you pick is a motivator for all serious writers.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 27, 2019:

Sean, I readily see your passion in that quote. Keep on being/writing. Your public needs your offerings. Thank you.

Liz Westwood from UK on February 27, 2019:

This is a great list of inspirational quotes and so appropriate for Hub Pages.

Nithya Venkat from Dubai on February 27, 2019:

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on February 27, 2019:

Dora, this is amazing! I'm so glad your friend told you to jump on his back. These are all motivating quotes. My favorite is number eleven.

Verlie Burroughs from Canada on February 27, 2019:

Your motivational quotes for writers are just so Dora! I'm always writing in my mind, but getting it down on paper is the challenge. It's helpful to know that even the best writers have these moments too.

Glen Rix from UK on February 27, 2019:

A comprehensive list of good advice, Dora. One that doesn't appear in your list and which has stuck in my memory is that all good writers are also voracious readers.

Mary Norton from Ontario, Canada on February 27, 2019:

These are truly inspiring but the one that really caught my attention was that of sylvia Plath. Yes, the still voice inside us. Listening to it requires a silence that often I just can't reach into.

Eric Dierker from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on February 27, 2019:

I come back to learn more. Something was scratching at my skull. I figure I was a pre-teen. My father was a man of some note. And he took us to see Mr. Welles a couple of times and he told stories to us kids. So 51 caught me. I did not leave without being happy. (I think my dad was his doc but I had no idea of that or that he was famous)

Down Sedona way.

Tim Truzy from U.S.A. on February 27, 2019:

I love all of these quotes, Ms. Dora. Particularly this one:

12. Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. ―Martin Luther King Jr.

Much respect - Tim

Ioannis Arvanitis from Greece, Almyros on February 27, 2019:

My dear Sister, you have made an excellent gift to us all, once again! I like to paraphrase the famous quote of René Descartes "Cogito, ergo sum" to "Scribo, ergo sum" that means "I write, so I exist". That's what writing is for me.

Grateful for your luminous Heart!

Sean

Audrey Hunt from Idyllwild Ca. on February 26, 2019:

These fine quotes have been educational for me. As I'm working on my first book, I found helpful advice and suggestions sprinkled through each quote. (I was tempted to use the word very, but didn't want you to substitute it for "damn.") :)

Michael-Milec on February 26, 2019:

Extremely powerful:"We should write because humans are spiritual beings and writing is a powerful form of prayer and meditation. ―Julia Cameron

Indeed, The words are spiritual force - influencing the souls. Thus we carefuly "choose our words."

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 26, 2019:

Venkatachari M from Hyderabad, India on February 26, 2019:

Dora, these are all so amazing and interesting quotes that you collected from so many great writers. Each one is a golden advice to follow.

I want to write so much but, when I sit at the keyboard, I do not find the flow. Everything seems fragmented. And, I get stuck up. I will keep these tips for bookmarked for my frequent motivations.

Thanks for sharing them.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 26, 2019:

Bill, I'm sure that passion as a writer is ingrown. After all, you're the writer's motivator in person. Thanks for being the blessing that you are!

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on February 26, 2019:

Of course I loved all of these, Dora! I'm not sure where my motivation comes from, but I'm sure glad I have it. :)

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 26, 2019:

Eric, I can tell that you bring out the best in people around you. Your comments always make me feel useful. Thank you.

Eric Dierker from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on February 26, 2019:

Too long and too hard to absorb. And like us Christian folk like to say "AMEN!". This will be "required" reading in my home. We will not limit it to writing, we will envelope it in every endeavor. You put my feet back on higher ground. Where can I love more today and inspire others?

We must write. I feel there is no better quality yet I must pause and appreciate other qualities in people. You are a guiding light.

Thanks so much and I will be back a few times.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 26, 2019:

Thanks, Chitrangada. Hope you can overcome the obstacles and free yourself to write as often as possible. I know that I benefit from your poetry as well as prose. Best to you!

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 26, 2019:

Mike, thank you for sharing. We have to believe that success will come. We all on HP are closer than before we started. Let's keep going.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 26, 2019:

Thanks, Lori. We writers have many similarities. I can relate to all those quotes you selected, although I have to get brave in responding to No. 21.

Dora Weithers (author) from The Caribbean on February 26, 2019:

Thanks John. I'm sure you guessed that I'll also be referring to them. We all need some motivation sometime. Glad you can use them.

Chitrangada Sharan from New Delhi, India on February 26, 2019:

Excellent motivational quotes, for the writers!

I liked all of them and would be referring to your article, from time to time. This is so relatable. Although I enjoy expressing myself through my writings, I also need some amount of inspiration. On some days, even if some ideas are floating in my mind, I am unable to write. There are various reasons for it but that’s a different story.

Thanks for sharing this valuable article!

Kristen Howe from Northeast Ohio on February 26, 2019:

Dora, what a great list of inspiration quotes to motivate us. Thanks for sharing. I agree with them.

FlourishAnyway from USA on February 26, 2019:

This was superb, Dora. Some of my favorite writers are here: Sylvia Plath, Ernest Hemingway. Flannery O’Connor. It’s hard to pick a favorite piece or advice because there are so many good quotes here.

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on February 26, 2019:

Hi Ms. Dora, These quotes are so inspirational, and sending a quote per day to a friend shows your thoughtfulness. I will return to this article again and again for inspiration.

I liked all the quotes. I thought Dr. Seuss had good advice. I read his books countless times to my children. I also thought Maya Angelou's and Sylvia Plath's quotes very good.

You have done an excellent job writing this article, and it will help many writers to be inspired.

Readmikenow on February 26, 2019:

Ms Dora, excellent article! Back in the 90s I paid good money to hear a lecture from the well-known science fiction author Ray Bradbury. He talked about rejection and shared a story about how when he started out he collected his rejection letter. He had a wall where he would post his rejection letters and would always look at them. Of course someone from the audience asked him why. He said because he believed every rejection letter brought him closer to an acceptance. He said he was a writer and success was going to happen eventually. I thought that was an amazing attitude. Enjoyed reading your article.

Lori Colbo from Pacific Northwest on February 25, 2019:

I love love loved this. So many good quotes that resonated with me. I did a similar piece a few years ago and you have all different quotes from mine so I consider it a full to overflowing experience.
